Environmental Sustainability - Green IT - Presentation Transcript

    1. Bremen Lee | Senior IT Manager | Microsoft IT IT as a key enabler to a low carbon economy while also promoting company growth – A Microsoft IT Story
    2. Agenda
      • How Microsoft IT grows with the company
      • Why Green?
      • Where is the opportunities
      • How Microsoft IT does it?
      • Call to action
    3. How Microsoft IT grows with the company
      • Improve profit margin
      • Enable business to sell
      • Improve productivity and efficiency
    4. Why Green? Cost Control Operation Cost Social Responsibility Company Image
    5. Where are our opportunities? Client Computing Procurement Paper Server Management Application Datacenter Office Workspace Travel Policy Software Communication People
    6. Data Center Energy Consumption
      • DC use 1.5% of the electricity produced in the US
      • Expanding rapidly with prediction 5% in 5-8 years!
      • >50% of energy of data center comes from outside the computer (air conditioning, etc.) – Low efficiency
      • 55% energy used by Microsoft campus comes from “hallway labs”

    7. Computer Power Consumption The Battery Life Challenge - Balancing Performance and Power (Intel Corporation) http://onlinetoolkit.intel.com/docs/busi/ExtendingBatteryLifeWP.pdf Source: Intel Server Products Power Budget Analysis Tool http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/cs-016976.htm
    8. How to start to save energy
    9. In the progress: Dynamic Datacenter will help
    10. Data Center– Result
      • Server Efficiency- going up
        • High voltage distribution
        • Shared power supplies
        • More efficient cooling– higher inlet temperatures
      • PUE– going down
        • Economizers- use outside air to cool when possible
        • Density- higher density drives efficiency
      • Utilization– going up
        • Virtualization
        • Shared Infrastructure
Power Utilization Effectiveness (PUE) is the ratio of total data center power to the IT load and represents the amount of auxiliary support (primarily cooling) the servers require to perform. The graph above shows the 30% improvement in PUE one of our facilities was able to achieve over the last three years through innovation and adoption of best practices * This significance of this improvement becomes clear when you consider that each 0.1 improvement in PUE represents over 4000 MWhrs of electricity conserved annually.

Some of these settings are only appropriate in very special circumstances and should only be used with a thorough understanding of how they function. (Disabling suspend states, for example, is only needed in hardcore BitLocker Drive Encryption deployments.) Here's an overview of the 35 settings to get you started.
    13. Reduce the environmental footprint with OneNote 2007
      • Move from paper notebooks to e-notebooks
      http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA102377491033.aspx
    14. Electronic workflows
      • Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 comes with electronic workflow module
        • Circulate information, run approval processes or requests vacations without printing forms
        • Be up to date with automatic status reports
        • Fully integrates in Office & Outlook
    15. Maybe you can avoid some travels
      • Office Live Meeting and Office Communication Server 2007 allow scheduled and ad-hoc audio video and web conferencing from 2 to thousands of people
      • See your counterparts in new ways
    16. Corporate Environmental Practices
      • Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)
      • Transportation and Commuting
      • Renewable Power
      • Green Buildings
      • Employee Empowerment
      • PC Recycle Practices extended to employee
    17. Summary and Call to Action
