Glossary:
KMS = knowledge management systems
KM = Knowledge Management
IT = Information Technology
Examine the factors that may influence the success of KMS in healthcare
Propose the KMS success model for healthcare
Definition of Knowledge management systems
A class of information systems developed to facilitate KM processes (creation, storing, dissemination and application of knowledge) (Alavi and Leidner, 2001).
Knowledge sharing in healthcare has been identified as critical factor in successful healthcare delivery (Wickramasinghe, 2003)
Knowledge sharing is hard to realize
Highly professionalized field
Monodisciplinary communities
Strong professional boundaries
Previous studies by DeLone and McLean (2003), the factors that contribute to the success of information systems are:
Information quality
System quality
Perceived usefulness
User satisfaction
KMS involves far more than just technology, organizational and social issues are important
Organizational issues – culture of sharing, incentive and leadership (Nicolini, Powell, Conville and Martinez-Solano, 2007)
Kulkarni et al. (2006) KM Success Model include organizational supports but focusing on knowledge use as a measure of success
Kulkarni et al.’s KM Success Model
Combination of DeLone and McLean IS Success Model (Knowledge Content Quality, KM System quality, Perceived Usefulness and User satisfaction)
Organizational issues – leadership, incentive, co-worker and supervisor
Modification
Culture of sharing
Subjective norm (Azjen & Fishbein , 1975)
Security – perceived security
KMS Use for Retrieval KMS Use for Sharing Knowledge Management Systems for Healthcare (KMSH) Success Model Integrated Model (D&M IS Success Model Organizational and Social issues)
Research method
Quantitative
Research design
Questionnaire administration
mail and online
Survey instruments based on existing instruments
Initial survey
To study the use of IT for knowledge sharing in healthcare organizations
Respondents – CIOs of DHBs and MSOs
Main survey
To examine the success factors of KMS
Respondents – employees in DHBs and MSOs
Theory
Explore the original model in context of healthcare
Better understanding of success factors of KMS
Practice
Provide the guidelines for successful implementation of KMS in healthcare
Many KM initiatives fail due to reluctance of employees to use KMS to share and retrieve knowledge
Factors influencing knowledge sharing should be given high priorities in organizations
For successful implementation of KMS in healthcare, organizational issues should be given the consideration
