Literacy and SSP Early Reading Initial Teacher Education Resource List
1. Theme: Literacy, SSP and Early Reading
This is one of 11 lists of themed resources originally created as a result of recommendations by participants at a series of eight HEA workshops held around England in spring/summer 2012. In this sense, they form a record of the views of the particular contributors, and are not intended to be exhaustive, or exclusive.
Lists are in alphabetical order, and enough information is included in the referencing to allow resources to be located readily. If the individual resources are to be used (in course documentation, academic work, etc.), you may need to adapt this to fit your own institutional requirements.

This theme is a Government priority in England. The guidance sent to all ITE providers in England in this area was created by the TDA in 2011. An electronic copy can be found via the link on the University of Brighton’s website below. For all ITE providers in England this is the ‘go to’ document.
TDA (2011) Systematic synthetic phonics in initial teaching training: Guidance and support materials. Available at
http://www.brighton.ac.uk/education/environment/resources/national_priorities.php? PageId=311 – click on link under Literacy Skills.
The Rose Review (2006) is referred to several times in the TDA guidance and can be found here:
Rose, J. (2006) Independent review of the teaching of reading. Available at https://www.education.gov.uk/publications/eOrderingDownload/0201-2006PDF-EN- 01.pdf.
The DCSF materials (2009) ‘Developing Literacy in Initial Teacher Training’ (DLITT) materials were highly praised at several workshops. The hard copy file of resources with an accompanying DVD was distributed to providers and the only online copy we have found to date is on the University of Cumbria’s website:
DCSF (2009), Developing Literacy in Initial Teacher Training (DLITT)*, The National Strategies, Available at: http://ictedusrv.cumbria.ac.uk/dlitt2/index.htm
* We are grateful that the University of Cumbria have shared the link. Most of the resources work, however some items do not. Unfortunately we have not yet found a site containing the complete fully functioning set of materials.
