Evaluation Question 1

  1. 1. Evaluation Question 1 In what ways does your media product use, develop orchallenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  2. 2. Illustrating a unique andinnovative idea is often difficultwith an unremarkable, overplayedsong. Therefore, to appeal to theniche market of the trendy, lo-filoving youth of today, we chose tocreate a music video for the song„Billie Holiday‟ by the harmoniousart-rock group, Warpaint. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  3. 3. The inventive, melodic track bythe all-girl band is popular withinour group, as is the lo-fi,dream-pop genre. We chose todevelop the video as a means ofpromoting our tastes andencouraging interest in the band. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  4. 4. When beginning to develop ourvideo, we took the philosophies -those concerning music videos - ofmany theorists into account, mostnotably those of Andrew Goodwin. His theory applies the idea thatthere are five basic propertieswhich a music video should havein order to focus an audience;narrative and performance, thoughtbeats, star image, the relation ofthe song to the visuals and, ofcourse, the technical aspects of amusic video. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  5. 5. Although we agree that narrativeand performance are key featuresthat aid the production andreception of a video, we alsochallenged this theory by adding astimulatingly ambiguousstoryline, which actively inclinesthe audience to interpret thethemes and ideas personally. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  6. 6. The song, and therefore the lyrics of„Billie Holiday‟ exemplify themes oflove, lust and heartbreak. We have usedthese ideas to develop our video, withthe narrative implying that the couplehave a turbulent relationship. We havenot included both of the characters in thesame shot, but used graphic matches torepresent how they have similar feelingseven though they are not together. Wehave not only challenged Goodwin‟stheory, but we have also developed itfor, in our opinion, a more effective andthought-provoking music video, ratherthan a tedious, trite one. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  7. 7. The basis of the video is to showthat the female character has beenunfaithful to the male character. Atthe end of the video he, inanger, tears off his neck-tie andthrows it into the lapping waves. This also shows irony as the lyricsbreakdown of the song shows“nothing you can do can make meuntrue to my guy.” This satiricalview is also used in real mediaproducts, such as the music videosfor „Dirty Cash‟ by Dizzee Rascaland „Learn to Fly‟ by Foo Fighters. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  8. 8. We also included a series oflip-syncs to emphasize the facialexpressions of thecharacters, which in turn reflectthe mood and themes within thevideo. We have edited cuts to thebeat of the video, such as theturning off of a light on the beatwhen the mood of the songchanges, and a perpetual slow pacewhen the mood and beat isconstant. This technique is similarto those used in real mediaproducts of the same genre andsupports Goodwin‟s theory ofthought beats enhancing a musicvideo. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  9. 9. However, we have also challengedthis by adding cuts when the beatdoes not change. The song, by itsvery nature is slow and séance-likewith a soft, unchanging tone. Wetherefore added cuts when the beatdoes not change, but when the endof a line of lyrics finishes. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  10. 10. However, as the song comes to aclimax, there is a sudden fast pacewithin the song; we intercut shotsof the characters at fast speed, withexaggerated facial expressions toemphasize the dramatic ending ofthe relationship. This technique isalso used in the videos for „Stars‟by Warpaint and „Spitting Blood‟by WU LYF. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  11. 11. We have tried to steer clear ofillustrating a specific starimage, and have used simple shotsof a female singer dressed invintage clothing and modest make-up, similar to the original musicvideo, as well as many other musicvideos from artists of the samegenre, such as Best Coast, DumDum Girls and Sleigh Bells. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  12. 12. The male character wears atimeless outfit of a plain whiteshirt, black tie and trousers. Thisalso nods to the French new-wave, as the outfit is similar tothose worn by Jean-PaulBelmondo in „À bout de souffle‟and Sami Frey in „Bande à part‟. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  13. 13. We developed these costumes not only becausethey are uniquely fashionable, but also to showour influences throughout the video. Thischallenges and develops Goodwin‟s theory ofstar image, and although our video does notfocus on a particular „star‟, it shows how theambiguous narrative and innovativeperformance work in harmony to illustrate ourideas, without the need for meet shots ofscantily-clad women or a tween boy-band toattract the audience. This develops Goodwin‟stheory of star image, making the music videomore ambiguous and haunting - the mainthemes within the song. This also relates thesong and lyrics to the visuals. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  14. 14. When filming the visuals for thesong, we took Goodwin‟s theory ofrelation into account. We adheredto the conventions and developedthe ideas of amplification andillustration, but also challengedGoodwin‟s theory by disregardingdisjuncture. We thought that todisregard the songcompletely, such as in Daft Punk‟s„Da Funk‟, would be less effectivethan building narrative and visualsaround the lyrics, tone and pace. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  15. 15. We chose amplification as ourmain method of correlation, aswell as some illustration. Thevideo, in that sense, is similar tothe music videos for Best Coast‟s„When I‟m With You (I Have Fun)‟and M83‟s „We Own The Sky‟. Weused a simple narrative of love andheartbreak to develop themeswithin the video, as well as only afew characters to focus audienceattention. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  16. 16. We also used illustration; forexample, when the lyrics are „likebirds of a feather, we sticktogether‟ our video shows a flockof birds. Our media product bothadheres to and challenges theconventions of real mediaproducts, as well as developingGoodwin‟s theory of relation ofvisuals to lyrics and song.
