ENSHRINEMENT 2010 Mason Square Monument <ul><li>Although the City of Springfield and Springfield College are recognized as the “place” where the game of “Basket Ball” was invented, no monument or marker celebrates the exact spot where the first game was played </li></ul><ul><li>A Springfield native and Mason Square resident has undertaken a significant project to commemorate and celebrate the location of the first game in Mason Square </li></ul><ul><li>The project has broad and enthusiastic support from the neighborhoods, the city, and the Basketball Hall of Fame </li></ul>

ENSHRINEMENT 2010 <ul><li>Proper Recognition - “The First Game” </li></ul><ul><li>With streetscape improvements, a safe and secure location has been identified by the city just across the street from the location of the original “School for Christian Workers” gymnasium </li></ul><ul><li>While busy State Street intersects the proposed monument location and the exact spot where the first game was played, a second piece will mark the exact spot and both sites are linked in the evening by a strong beam of light emanating from both sites </li></ul>

ENSHRINEMENT 2010 <ul><li>Proper Recognition - “The First Game” </li></ul><ul><li>The city will construct a 30 foot circumference area of granite and brick to have the look of a contemporary basketball. </li></ul><ul><li>Five information panels, up-lit at night, will rise and tell the story of the first game and the significance of the Mason Square location </li></ul><ul><li>Two brass statues– one 7 feet in height– will mark the spot of the first game. </li></ul><ul><li>Concept: a player from 1891 is passing to a youth of today– from the Mason Square neighborhood– to mark the games beginning, its impact today, and the future impact of basketball on the world stage </li></ul>

ENSHRINEMENT 2010 <ul><li>The Benefits </li></ul><ul><li>A historically significant site in Springfield is honored and celebrated </li></ul><ul><li>A challenged neighborhood community is “finally recognized” for a worldwide contribution </li></ul><ul><li>Pride is built in the city and in the neighborhood </li></ul><ul><li>The monument becomes an educational resource for the five public schools within walking distance </li></ul><ul><li>The monument becomes a historical site to visit by tourists drawn to the Hall of Fame to live basketball history </li></ul>

ENSHRINEMENT 2010 <ul><li>A Monument of Significance </li></ul><ul><li>The total project has a value exceeding $200,000 </li></ul><ul><li>The City of Springfield Parks Department will commit $35,000 in site, foundation and electrical work </li></ul><ul><li>The Hall of Fame has negotiated the services of its Master Sculptor Brian Hanlon (Tom’s River, NJ) at no cost for design and hand sculpting of the pieces ($50,000 cost savings) </li></ul><ul><li>A small group is raising private $ to complete the project; $110,000 is the requirement </li></ul>

  28. 28. ENERGY MOMENT Our objective is to bring the “World Basketball” to Springfield. In doing that, the highlight of our day will be a match-up between the Puerto Rico 18U National Team and a New England All Star Team (TBD). Since close to 30% of the Springfield population are Puerto Rican nationals and there will obviously be lots of fans cheering for the local team, this match-up will be highly anticipated! VS.
