The name comes froma resort community in New York State where, in 1875, asummer program of lectures, sermons and music attractedsuch enthusiastic audiences that within a few years similarprograms sprang into existence for the public in other parts ofthe country. Today, Chautauqua upholds the tradition of offeringentertainment, education and community-based heritage.Attendees gather under the big tent and enjoy scholars-in-residence presenting first-person portrayals of some of our mostimportant historical figures along with a variety of activities forall ages. Each evening, humorist Mark Twain moderates one of fivepresentations of these historical figures: Union General andrailroad builder Grenville Dodge, author Willa Cather, PoncaChief Standing Bear, homesteader and inventor GeorgeWashington Carver, and homesteader and author Laura IngallsWilder. Each Chautauquan gives a first-person presentation as his orher historical character, then answers questions. Workshopsfor children and adults along with other activities are heldthroughout the Chautauqua week.Free Land Chautauqua allows the audience to experience andexplore the impact of landmark legislation through the historicallens of homesteading, migration and displacement on theGreat Plains. The Homestead Act, the Morrill Act and the PacificRailway Act all were passed within six weeks of each otherin 1862 and set into motion sweeping changes for the GreatPlains region and the American West. As part of the Chautauquaresidency, six scholars explore the lasting impact of the 1862legislation and how those events affect Americans today.Evening programs will be held in the Chautauqua tent located inRailroad Town at Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer.
