The Paperclay Revolution This paper by Graham Hay will explore reasons for, and consequences of, the quiet paperclay revolution.

After a decade, a third of all studio and classroom clay used in Perth, Western Australia, is paperclay. (Figures are based upon percentages supplied by all major clay retail outlets). This in a city of 1.5m people and an estimated population of 700 professional ceramic potters/artists and 35,000 recreational users. In the USA volumes are doubling annually. This paper by Graham Hay will explore reasons for, and consequences of, this quiet revolution.

Differences between counties have ment that the revolution is happening at different rates in different coutries.   In the context of our centuries old traditions of working in clay, paperclay it is both unsurprising and revolutionary.   Adobe building techniques, utilising the combination of high fibre straw and animal manure, have been part of the human lanscape since the beginning of human history. I myself grew up in a century old farmhouse in New Zealand which had three foot thick walls made from clay, straw, horse manuare with a waterproof rendering.   Simialrly there was a lot of artists in the sixties and later who experiemented with adding shredded paper, and other things, to clay. They just didn’t mechanicaly break down the paper or plant material down to individual cellulose fibres, or grasp the significance of it, if they did.

A number of technical papers documented the emergence of a material combining paper and clay. This was, and still is essentially a high temerture oven shelve protector-a little like animinium foil (check termology for USA here) to stop glazes fusung th kiln shelves

It’s surprising that it has taken this long to spread to studios and classrooms. For the principals are simple; use cellulose fibre to strength dry clay and to increase the movement of water (and air) through clay bodies.
