Do you have data in an external system you would like to display in SharePoint? If so this is the session for you! See the steps involved to create and displaying information from a line of business application. You will also see how to leverage that information and use it as metadata in other SharePoint lists and libraries. You don’t need to be a developer to configure this functionality and take SharePoint 2010 to the next level. With the new Business Connectivity Services you can read and write data using a variety of methods (SQL and Web Services) with just a few clicks. If you want to be the SharePoint star in your organization Business Connectivity Services will help get you there!

  • Name and Role in CompanyNumber of Years in CompanyRole in SharePointHow do you use SP today (if at all)
  • – Product database managed by external source –product metadata is integrated from the external database and utilized internally. - External HR system integrated to provide employee information on company intranet (employee anniversary web part, employee birthday this week, company directory with views by dept, by shift)
  • Bdc v1 - read data was nice but not enough… required - intensive ADO.NET code - not able to search same information via SharePoint Search.Bdc v2 - read and write data and surfacing through sharepoint search was good but required - xml development - there were no rich tools togenerate the required XML. Developers had to either write it manually or invest on 3rd party tools such as BDC Meta Man.– SharePoint Enterprise CAL and lot of customers had to go all the way up to Enterprise to get this feature when they could have easily settled with WSS 3.0 for rest of the things.– BDC didn't support Information Workers to take data offlineBCSExternal List – this is a brand-new list type we see in SharePoint 2010 and this list template allows us to create a new list associating with an External Content Type (ETC). External Lists looks and feels like any other normal list in SharePoint 2010 and this list allow all the CRUD operations against the external system.External Data Column – in MOSS 2007 we had a column type called Business Data Column and this has been re-engineered in this release to form the External Data Column. We can add a new column to an existing list or library based on this to bring data from an external system.External Data Web Parts – SharePoint 2010 provides 05 web parts named Business Data Item, Business Data List, Business Data Related List, Business Data Actions and Business Data Item Builder that can be added to any SharePoint page to display external data.Enterprise Search – SharePoint 2010 Search allows users to search data available in external systems within the SharePoint Search Center.Office 2010 – SharePoint Workspace (SPW) and Outlook clients provide the capability of connecting to External Lists and take external data offline and sync them later. Word client allows creating or editing documents with data coming from lists and libraries as external data columns.– Product database managed by external source – with BCS product metadata is integrated from the external database and utilized internally. - External HR system integrated to provide employee information on company intranet (employee anniversary web part, employee birthday this week, company directory with views by dept, by shift)
  • External List - allows to interact with external data as if it were a normal SharePoint listExternal Data Column - provides a hybrid between a SharePoint list and an external list.Business Data Connectivity (BDC) Service - shared service and takes advantage of the SharePoint 2010 Products shared services architecture. In Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010, services are not contained within a Shared Services Provider (SSP) as they were in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. Infrastructure for hosting services has been moved into SharePoint Foundation 2010 and is included with SharePoint Server 2010. The configuration of services is more flexible. Individual services can be configured independently by different sets of administrators. Multiple instances of the same service, such as the Business Data Connectivity service, can run on the same farm, each with a unique set of administrators. Connector Framework - Indexing connectors crawl, enumerate, and create a local index of content, and are composed of the following: BDC Model File   Provides the connection information to the external system, and the structure of the data.Connector   Provides the code that connects to the external systemSecure Store Service - In Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010, the Secure Store Service replaces the single sign-on (SSO) feature. The Secure Store Service is a claims-aware authorization service that includes a secure database for storing credentials that are associated with application IDs. These application IDs can be used to authorize access to external data sources.External Data Search - search services in SharePoint 2010 are able to index the external data using the external content type and show meaningful results to the searchers of the external dataProfile Pages – A profile page in Business Connectivity Services (BCS) allows displaying all the information for an external content. A profile page can display all the fields in a record for a specific customer and can also display all the orders associated with the customer. Profile page has a unique URL, as each entity (External Content Type) has its own profile pageBusiness Data Web Parts – reusable components that display content on Web pages in SharePoint 2010. Rich Client Integration - offers users many ways of interacting with external systems from their Microsoft Office 2010 client applications.

  • What is a content type?
A content type is a reusable collection of metadata (columns), workflow, behavior, and other settings for a category of items or documents in a Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 list or document library.
Content types enable you to manage the settings for a category of information in a centralized, reusable way.
    (MSDN, May 2010)
    Document templates: MSAs, Proposals, Contracts
    List Content types:
    Service Requests
