Higher Ambition:How GreatLeaders CreateEconomic andSocial ValueDiscover 5 ways leadingorganizations are optimizingboth their performance andpeople without sacrificingone for the other.
Learn how to: • Build enduring enterprises that solve for both people and profits. • Forge winning strategies fit for your company’s unique capabilities. • Energize and align diverse global firms. • Improve leadership throughout your organization. Economic value or social value? Performance or people? However you phrase it, many corporate leaders have seen these as opposing goals, believing that a company can’t serve both masters. Choosing which goal to prioritize may have worked in the past, but today’s leaders must win on all fronts – people, customers, communities and shareholders. The question is how. This eBook answers the question by citing successful leaders featured in Harvard Business School professor Michael Beer’s on-demand webinar, Higher Ambition: How Great Leaders Create Economic and Social Value. Professor Beer reveals how these ambitious executives are following 5 special disciplines to do good for society and still do well in performance.2
The 5 higher ambition leadership disciplines 1. Forge strategic identity. 2. Build a shared commitment to excel. 3. Create community out of diversity. 4. Commit to collective leadership. 5. Discipline 1: Forge a strategic identity Craft a strategic identity that connects head and heart. Making an impact, changing people’s lives in how they communicate – that was always in our PowerPoint slides. Jorma Ollila, Nokia See organizational capability as strategy. The opportunity was unleashing the entrepreneurialism of the store managers while also gaining the benefits of scale. Instead of being national, we were going to become global/national. Anders Dahlvig, Ikea Commit yet adapt. The reason we have been so successful is that we’ve been brutally honest with ourselves. Ed Ludwig, Becton Dickinson4
Discipline 2: Build a shared commitment to excel Create a culture of accountability. Every executive (on top teams) had opportunities to ask questions (challenge nonperformance). Doug Conant, Campbell Soup Earn the right to lead. [I] gained trust and credibility from my team, and the rest of the organization, when I stood up and said these things were wrong. Ed Ludwig, Becton Dickinson Build the future one quarter at a time. Continuous improvement rather than a ‘quick fix.’ Doug Conant, Campbell Soup5
Focus on the fundamentals that drive sustainable success. It was quite unambiguous. The ten groups that scored highest on cultural factors had a [higher] growth rate. Christian Clausen, Nordea Discipline 3: Create community out of diversity Manage financial and cultural risk by: • Controlling debt to avoid harming culture • Ensuring growth (organic and inorganic) to preserve culture If you want to grow healthily, you cannot overgrow in one year. It’s not good for your bones. Paul Bulcke, Nestlé6
Enhance collaboration across the enterprise by: • Strengthening connections across boundaries • Making diversity a source of advantage Respect is incredibly important. Leif Johansson, Volvo Group Build extraordinary commitment to overall success by: • Giving voice to personal aspirations and values • Establishing meaningful purpose If you are helping to address a fundamental need in society, you are going to prosper. Ed Ludwig, Becton Dickinson7
Discipline 4: Commit to collective leadership Drive career development. It’s often about unlocking people you’ve got… working out how to put them in a different place or help them build on strengths… they haven’t quite realized how to use. Peter Sands, Standard Charter Bank Develop next-generation leadership. I’m cultivating the next generation of leaders personally in a hands-on way. Doug Conant, Campbell Soup Build a true team at the top. A lot smarter together. Russ Fradin, Hewitt Associates8
Discipline 5: Lead with sisu Sisu: Having the guts, stamina and will to keep going in the face of adversity. Engage and earn trust. He was amazed when I started listening to what he had to say and taking notes, because no one had ever done that. Archie Norman, Asda Establish a just process. A greater percentage of the executive suite had to go compared to front-line employees. Russ Fradin, Hewitt Associates Stay the course. I just finally learned if you pick one or two things, and drive it for 4 or 5 years, good things will happen. Tim Solso, Cummins9
