  • 2. 1 What is glaucoma? • • • Classified as a group of diseases. Damages the optic nerve. Can cause permanent vision loss if left untreated. 1
  • 3. 2 What causes glaucoma? • • • Slow fluid drainage. Pressure builds up and damages the optic nerve. Optic nerve damage can occur at different pressure levels for different people.
  • 4. 3 Who is at higher risk? • African Americans over age 40.
  • 5. 4 Who is at higher risk? • • African Americans over age 40. Everyone over age 60.
  • 6. 5 Who is at higher risk? • • African Americans over age 40. Everyone over age 60, especially Mexican Americans.

  • 8. 7 What are the symptoms? • • • At first, there are none. As glaucoma progresses, side vision fails. Field of vision narrows as glaucoma worsens.

  • 14. 13 What can you do to protect your vision? • • • See your eye care professional. If eligible, use Medicare. Get a dilated eye exam every one to two years.
