Gamification The Technology, Defined Typically gamification is applied to non- game applications and processes in order to encourage people to adopt them or to influence how they are used. Gamification works by making technology more engaging, by encouraging users to engage in desired behaviors, by showing a path to mastery and autonomy, by helping to solve problems and not being a distraction, and by taking advantage of humans’ psychological predisposition to engage with games. The technique can encourage people to perform chores that they ordinarily consider boring, such as completing surveys, shopping, filling out tax forms, or reading web sites. What Does It Do? Gamification is the application of game design thinking to non-game applications to make them more engaging. Gamification has become popular in marketing because the same mechanics that make games addictive to gamers can be applied to products, services, and brand engagement. Industry Jargon Acronyms Gamification can be applied to any industry but typically includes the use of the following techniques: Badges:Achievement-based rewards for accomplishing a task or series of tasks. Leaderboards: Members track their performance relative to other members with the goal of accomplishing a top or featured spot. Progress Bars: Success toward an accomplishment is gradually displayed as tasks or activities are met. Avatars: Custom avatars are digital representations of users or group members.Avatarsareusedtopersonalize the user experience, particularly on leaderboards. Real-time feedback: Delivery of real- time notification to users to advance the progress of a task or activity. Virtual currency: Prizes or virtual money to reward desired tasks or behaviors. Social Media Integration: Custom integration with social media platforms to encourage users to share information about badges, rewards, etc. with their network. Quest or Mini-Game: The use of a game or quest as part of a task or badge accomplishment. Features and Functions Enterprise class gamification solutions are designed for two primary uses: internal engagement and customer engagement. • Automated badge recognition through business rules and pre-defined thresholds. • Apply rules to digital content – a document, a webpage, a system, etc. • API integration with other systems (CRM, Blog, Webpage, etc.). • Reporting and analytics to measure the success of programs. Gamification is fairly new as a technology applied to business, but it has proven to be a powerful tool in both internal business productivity and external customer engagement. Is gamificaiton right for my business? Typically gamificaiton is applied to community based environments where competition can be rewarded and shared among community members. But gamificaiton is also gaining traction in sales enablement, new hire training, brand marketing, and customer communities
