    • A tiny bit about me… 1992 Diagnosed with MS (aged 19… I’m 41 now so I’ve had MS 22 years) 1994 Started working for RNIB 1995 Founded online community for people with MS (Jooly’s Joint) In the time since, I’ve been a disability rights campaigner with particular focus on  How disabled, older and people with long-term conditions will get on in the digital future  The emotional well-being and accurate representation of people with MS© 2012 Giraffe Sense Mentoring Ltd
    • Can media policy help? Various attempts to represent people with MS in the media have FAILED  Our experience of MS is diverse  ‘We’ are not the same day on day  MS is NOT dramatic. It is ‘the slow disease’  Our conditions are often used to pull at heartstrings or evoke intolerance Exactly what kind of policy would help?  Characterisation is bound to fail… and may make things worse for people with MS  To accurately reflect the experience of MS you’d have to do a lot and often So what is my solution?  Higher visibility of people with MS in daily life  Stronger employment & equality legislation that doesn’t make us scared to tell people we have MS  Change our language. No ‘SUFFERS’, more ‘LIVES WITH’  Better intervention at time of diagnosis so people with MS have a more realistic expectation of what life with MS is like to help them to feel ‘at peace’ with it more quickly© 2012 Giraffe Sense Mentoring Ltd
