  2. 2.  Mothers Day in the United States is annuallyheld on the second Sunday of May. It celebrates motherhood and it is a time toappreciate mothers and mother figures. Many people give gifts, cards, flowers, candy,a meal in a restaurant or other treats to theirmother and mother figures, includinggrandmothers, great-grandmothers,stepmothers, and foster mothers. In the days and weeks before Mothers Day,many schools help their pupils to prepare ahandmade card or small gift for their mothers.

Mothers Day has also becomean increasingly important event forbusinesses in recent years. This isparticularly true of restaurants andbusinesses manufacturing and selling cardsand gift items.
