  • Hello everyone, I am Gigi Teo, and my team and I would like to present to you Artificial Intelligence as shown in the media.
  • The topics we’ll be covering today are: What is AI? Why do humans use it AI in Movies andIf AI is a boon or bane.
  • Now, last week, Mr. Chan has already taught us what AI is. However, I’d like to refresh your memory by giving you a brief description of it. Simply put, AI is the science of making machines do things that would require intelligence if done by men. This field was founded by Alan Turing in 1950, where he later goes on to invent the Turing Test; a test to deem if an AI is successful or not. Thus far, Turing has created the basis for research on artificial intelligence that is greatly motivated and inspired by human behaviors: the way we walk, talk, see, think and do. These intelligent agents are then expected to respond to an input respectively. According to Brookshear (2009), an agent is a “device” that responds to stimuli from its environment. While we commonly relate such “devices” to robots, intelligent agents are not restricted to them only. It encompasses an airplane on autopilot mode and even the tumble dryer that is capable of adapting its settings dependent on the load and its dampness.

    What is A.I.?

Artificial Intelligence is the science of making machines do things that would require intelligence if done by men.

--Marvin Minsky, founder of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

    Uses of A.I.
    Commercial Purpose
    • Calculate probabilities & formulate strategies to aid in decision-making.
    • Done by allowing the agent to analyze companies' statistics.
    • Substitute for human consultants.
    • Most efficient decisions can be made through analysis on various areas of the company.

    Consumer Purpose
    • Used in most video games.
    • Some are Non-playable Characters (NPCs) For example: Sports games, Shooters, Fighting games.
    • Various levels of intelligence that make the tasks challenging to players.

  • AGENT SMITH
    Movie
    • The Matrix (1999)
    Program Objective
    • To eliminate threats in the Matrix. By terminating human avatars which would bring instability to the simulated reality by the Machines who created it.
    Abilities
    • Defy rules of logic within the Matrix.
    • Ability to take over any virtual body connected to the Matrix. For example: Multiplying himself to do tasks.
  • AGENT SMITH
    Deviation
    • Yes.Planned to transform every character in the Matrix as a homogenous copy of himself.
    Cause of Deviation
    • Unplugged from the Matrix.
    Successful/Failed
    • FAILED. Tricked into assimilating Neo which caused self-destruction of Neo-Smith.
  • Tenjo Night
    NIGHTLY SERIES 01
    TV Series
    • ZettaiKareshi(2009) aka Absolute Boyfriend
    Program Objective
    • To be the perfect “male humanoid” completely devoted to his master aka girlfriend.
    Abilities
    • Customised characteristics E.g. Good at cooking, looks sexy when exercising, degree of jealousy, does household chores.
  • Tenjo Night
    NIGHTLY SERIES 01
    Deviation
    • Yes.Started to rationalise & develop its own emotions.
    Cause of Deviation
    • Unknown. Tenjo Night was scraped instead.
    Successful/Failed
    • BOTH. Initially successful in bringing love to his “girlfriend”. Failed when it broke down & could not serve her.

    Selfish Reasons
    • Machine would be treated with contempt. For example: Omnidriods from “The Incredibles”. Programmed to develop counter attacks to destroy opponents by learning its opponents moves.

    Public’s Interest
    • Invention would be widely lauded. For example: AstroBoy.
    • However, program may deviate from its original plans on their own accord.
    Therefore, difficult to conclude
    if A.I. if fully beneficial/detrimental
    to human beings.
