    Thanks for the additions:
I could have mentioned Sara Wheeler’s Antarctica books as well, plus Keri Smith and Miranda Sawyer

How about women travel writers? I’ll start you off:

Hearing Birds Fly - A Nomadic Year in Mongolia by Louisa Waugh (I thought this was fantastic and I continually found myself questioning how she could have coped with such a different way of living.)

Neither East Nor West - One Woman’s Journey Through the Islamic Republic of Iran - Christiane Bird. I enjoyed this too - even though when I was reading about Iran I was trying to gain an insiders perspective on the country. ( I found her book about Iran, `A Thousand Sighs, A Thousand Revolts’ a real struggle!)

Daisy Bates in the Desert (Australia) - Julia Blackburn. Really a biography - though in her later biographies Julie Blackburn also tells the story of her journey as she researches a particular person.
