Slide 13: Factfile • Date: 28th April 2007 • Time: 8.19 am • Epicentre: 7.5 miles off Folkestone in the Dover Straits • Magnitude: 4.3 on Richter Scale • Cause: movement along a fault line which runs through the English Channel • Last major earthquake in the UK: Dudley, W. Midlands, 2002 (felt by my mother in law!)

Slide 15: EFFECTS • Properties suffered structural damage such as cracked walls • Chimney stacks and roof tiles fell into the street • People were evacuated from houses – some went to the nearby pub… • Streets were closed for safety reasons • Gas supplies were cut off and over 600 leaks reported • Power supplies were cut off • Telephone services were cut off • Many 999 calls were made • Only 1 person was hospitalised, with a head injury • The Channel Tunnel was designed to cope with earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 on Richter Scale • There were long queues at burger vans as people couldn’t cook at home or make a cup of tea
