Survey results reveal conventions of pop music magazines
1. The results from this question is conventional
as when asked ‘What is your age?’ Most
answered 15-18 and the other answered 19-25.
This fits in with my genre of music as it is
mainly targeted at young people. Billboard’s
target audience is about 16-30. If I was going to
do this again I would ask more people in the
category 19-25 and 26-31, as only one person
who answered we’re in either of these
categories. However, overall most the people
answered were in the target audience of the
magazine that I researched.
The results from this question are also conventional
as when asked ‘What is gender?’ Most answered
female, however one answered male. This fits in
with the genre as the target-audience is female-leaning
however males do read these magazines
too. If I was to do this survey again, I would ask
more males as they do read this genre of magazine
such as Billboard, just not as much as females do.
2. All of the results I got for this question were
conventional as all of the artists listed were chart
toppers, popular ones being Rihanna, Beyonce
and The Script. These bands and artists have
topped the charts repeatedly and are the types of
artists that Billboard and other pop magazines
interview and feature in their magazines.
Most of the results I got for this question is stereotypically
what the target audience of pop magazines like to do.
Popular results include doing makeup, Spending time with
friends and shopping.
3. When asked what colours they would like to be featured in
a pop magazine, all of the results were bright colours such
as pink, blue and purple. This is conventional for pop
magazines aimed at young target audiences. However,
modern pop magazines I have researched used more
neutral colours like greys and whites. If I was to do the
survey again, I would change it to ‘What colours would you
like to see featured in a modern pop magazine’.
When asked what would attract them to buying a
magazine. Most popular answers include the colours
used, artists and bands on the front and interesting
articles advertised. This is conventional as most pop
magazines use bright colours and advertise the most
interesting articles on the front cover. They also use well-established
artists on the cover to attract the audience to
buy the magazine.
4. When asked what font type they would prefer to see
most people answered both, and only one answered
just Sans Serif. This is because in most pop magazines
they use mostly Serif fonts and usually have Sans serif
fonts featured to. However, modern magazines I have
researched such as Billboard mainly use Sans Serif
fonts, this is because they look more mature. If I was to
do this survey again, I would put Modern pop magazine
instead of just pop magazine to make it clear.
The content that people would like to see in a
magazine is quite conventional, with popular
choices being interviews with artists, cd reviews and
posters. This is conventional as these are what are
normally featured in a pop magazine. I will take into
consideration this information when I make my
magazine.
5. This result is conventional as magazines I have
researched come out weekly or monthly and when
asked ‘how often they read magazines’ most
people answered ‘weekly’ or ‘monthly’.
Most people answered ‘No’ when asked if they only read
pop magazines. This is because pop music is such a wide
genre, that many people who enjoy pop music and
magazines also enjoy other genres of magazines, therefore
read other magazines with different genres.
Conclusions
By doing this survey, I have found out what is conventional for a pop music magazine. I will use these when making my
magazine, for example using bright colours on the front cover, advertising the most interesting articles about current celebrities
on the front cover.
