Japan is a mixed economy, especially in the last 5 years. Their turn to less government control of business has defiantly helped the overall Japanese economy. They are working diligently on reducing the national debt, streamlining government, without impeding economic recovery. While the global economy is slow, if Japan holds on to its strong leadership, their recession will be shallow and shorter.

And correct me if I am wrong, but I also do believe that Japan was part of a command economy.

Actually, the United States is not part of a market economy; it is only a mixed economy.
