Do you know the penguins
Fred and Alice?
In 2006, Harvard professor John Kotter and Holger
Rathgeber wrote a book called ”Our Iceberg is Melting”.
In this parable, the authors tell the story of a penguin
colony that undergoes profound change. In a succinct
way, the story teaches us how to successfully lead
organizational change.
In a key scene of the story, penguins Fred and Alice
The “Congress Edition” models,
manage to build a sense of urgency for change within used during a leadership workshop in Italy
their colony. Fred suggests to use a glass bottle filled with
water as a three-dimensional model of the colony's
iceberg. The bottle, as intended, explodes from the
freezing water - just as the colony's iceberg might in the
nearing winter. This event makes the whole penguin
colony realize they have to change.
The idea of the exploding bottle inspired us to make
changes in the way we were arguing for transformation.
It eventually led us to develop a 3-D-model of a Beyond
Budgeting organization, one that would enable people to
”show“ the concept in an experiential and more palpable
way than by words alone. The models, we reckoned,
could be used by anyone, during transformational change
projects, and they would allow people to connect with a
tangible version of the vision for change.
A matter of fact: Many people understand things
better once they are able to touch them.
They want more than just talk: They want to literally “see“
and touch and “grasp“.

To design and build the models, the BBTN has worked
right in front of you
together with congenial artist Alexander Gerlach and his
team.
Since the first prototypes, the models served us brilliantly
during workshops and in transformation projects. When
concepts for ever new variations of the models arose, we
started putting a little catalogue of the different varieties
together – which we now make available to the public as
well. The 3-D-models make it easy to explain and to
understand Beyond Budgeting. They help initiating
change in day-to-day business, they represent and
convince.
Each of the “Beyond Budgeting
3-D models” is unique.
None of the 3-D-models is exactly like the other. Much
like pieces of art, the models are being hand-made
individually, or in small charges, built according to
individual orders.
The artisan production process turns these models into
valuable artifacts. Each unique piece is both a precious
sculpture, but it is also a toy capable of opening minds
and hearts. The models are wonderful for creative play in
21st century organizations, and for redesigning your
organizational structure, processes and leadership style.
