Front cover, contents page and double page spread
1. Text Layout/Font/Colour - The layout of text is a big bold green font on
the Masthead ‘The Source’ , alongside the ad on top and the some of the
cover lines. The bold font is to allow readers and the audience to
remember the audacious logo in order for promotion of sales.
Furthermore the colour they use (green) could infer many things; in
particular it is the conventional colour of money connoting that the artist
(Kendrick Lamar) is making money, highlighting his successes in the
game. Secondly the colour green is the colour of Marijuana - a
recreational drug and is used a lot with music artists. Conclusively it is
bright to convey an uplifting tone to the magazine , the expectations of
the magazine and the artist.
Image – The image that has been used or selected is a close up of the
artist (Kendrick Lamar) to connote that he’s the main character of the
magazine . In terms of NVC his facial expression is quite serious and the
eyes are focused on the readers which suggests an intimidating outlook
, the seriousness emphasise his personality as being a hard worker and
is expressed through his work. Moreover in terms of props, a crown has
been used to suggest he’s the king of the game; most recently he’s been
referred to as “King Kendrick Lamar” in his latest album ‘Good Kid Maad
City’. Additionally it is no positioned properly on his head which
connotes a modern trend, he’s following the system to a certain extent.
Finally the image itself of Kendrick covers the logo of the magazine
which shows the significance he has.
Main Cover line/cover line – Colour has been kept constant in he cover
lines (green) which is effective to make it constant and to connote a
sophisticated and professional to give the idea that it’s legit and proper
magazine towards the ideal target audience. One of the cover line
‘Compton’s Crown Jewel’ this is an instant link with the prop he’s
wearing (the Crown), Compton is a city in California where the artist
originates from.
It is noticeable in the cover lines that the most important things or
people are written in black for example ‘Obama’ and ‘Kendrick Lamar’
which is to use to stand from the other information and for the audience
to see the important parts of the magazine.
2. Images - Usually on the contents page, the
magazine will usually use a different artist in
order to get a variety with photos and get an
insight of things such as interviews about different
people . The image of 50 Cent is a long shot ,
covering his whole body taken from a blank
background which connote that we are
concentrated with the picture and also the writing
on the right-hand side .
Contents (writing) - The effect of using the
writing is to show the audience the content of the
magazine , relating to the target audience they’ll
be able to find out current gossip/news about
certain artists - evidently shown on the right hand
side . Font is written in bold capitals which allow
the writing to stand out . Similarly it is also very
basic ; a range of colours have not been used to
make it simple but effective showing sophistication
of this magazine contents page.
3. Image – it is self explanatory that the
photo of Eminem is larger than the
space of writing on the right hand
side of the double spread. Usually the
key demographic of this type of music
magazines (rap/hip hop0 have a
tendency to prefer image over text as
it engages the audience visually in
which they portray a 1000 words .
The image is a long shot showing
Eminem sitting on a chair in a
abandoned, derelict setting which can
connote a mysterious effect in which
a possible link with the artist that in
which could have a link with the
interview he is given.
Writing - On the right hand side of
the page magazine leaves a column to
add the interview used for the
audience who are interested about
Eminem which is realistically a small
figure. Furthermore a different font
has been used to signify an important
part of the double spread, it is a
quote from the artist, the effect of it
being to show their view and point
out a key part of the text to the
audience.
