  3. 3. 1. Regular information 1.1 General description More and more applications emerged with the rapid development of wireless data services. Thus, more and more devices need to be able to do wireless communication. With this background, Sky microwave Corp. develops GSM based services. This include embedded GSM terminals, GSM modems, GSM module integration, GPRS communication integration, GSM based remote monitoring and management systems, GSM applications in Industrial control, GSM security systems and more. The MOD 9001A GSM Modem is the ideal product for GSM based services. It incorporates advanced GSM technology with electronic device control technology to realize remote device control. The MOD 9001A GSM Modem allows users to monitor and control their devices via their mobile phones. We offer metal case modem with six I/O ports and audio stereo jack, which enables voice communication between the system and a phone/mobile phone. The MOD 9001A GSM Modem automatically sends out device status alert notification to the users through GSM SMS. On the other hand, the users can control the device and monitor its status by sending SMS instruction to the MOD 9001A GSM Modem. Therefore, it realizes unattended device monitor, and there is no need for cable connection with the wireless modem. In addition, the MOD 9001A GSM Modem is cheap, easy to use, and encompasses a large area range.   7. 7. Plant Control A 24-hour a day process plant is being monitored by MOD 9001A 1 GSM Modem. The plant engineer can request circuit control operating in the plant via MOD 9001A GSM Modem. Critical parameters result in different voltage in circuit will send an SMS message to the engineer. The engineer then sending back the instruction SMS to control the supervised device. This can be done from across the plant under GSM network. River Alarmed MOD 9001A GSM Modem is situated at a remote site monitoring river height, temperature and salinity. MOD 9001A GSM Modem is configured to transmit alarms by SMS when conditions in the river exceed set parameters. The user can change the alarm parameters or simply check river conditions at any time by sending a simple SMS message. Wind Monitor MOD 9001A 1 GSM Modem is monitor wind speed and direction at a remote site. It to be configured to accept single word command.   8. 8. 2.1 Install Modem l Remove the metal case Modem’s back-cover with a screwdriver l Insert a valid SIM Card provided by GSM network operator or service provider. l Select the serial port output voltage by properly setting the jumps (shown below).   9. 9. 2.4 Install Software The Modem can be configured and operated in two ways: Test software or mobile phone. Test software is needed that communicates peripheral devices through RS-232 interface. Hence, we will refer the application as to GSM Modem test software. There are two options for Window users: --Download a general testing application of serial port communication --Use GSM Modem Test software application from our company (please refer to the software guide) Note: Please make sure the download software can receive and send the data in ASCII. 3. Configuration 3.1 Modem turn-on Examine all the connection and turn on the Modem. If a RS232 monitor is connected to the Modem, the Modem will output the following ASCII string to the monitor in about 20 second. Please refer to the problem solving section if receive different string. DXY GSM-MODEM-AL 2004.08 PL-ERIC V4.0b SYS OK PRID ********** SIM OK 3.2 Modem set-up The modem can automatically send out alert SMS message to the preset target mobiles when it receives alert signal from the supervised equipments. And also the users can check the equipments’ status and control them by sending SMS instruction to the modem. Up to three mobile phones can be set as the targets in the modem. The setting can be achieved by two means: RS-232 monitor and mobile phone. Note: The section of RS232 monitor set-up is only relevant to the download application.   10. 10. 3.2.1 Use RS232 monitor to set SMS target The monitor uses ASCII (Hex) string to communicate with the modem. When setting is successful, the modem will return ASCII string, says ‘set ok’, to the monitor. Hence, the two numbers will be referred to as target one and target two.   11. 11. 3.3.3 Use mobile phone to set Call Alert Target When the Modem receives the alert signal, it can automatically call on one Call Alert Target. The setting SMS is: call number (the length between 3 to 12) ## CALL XXX..X When setting is successful, the mobile phone will receive SMS that says ‘set ok’. Note: Target number must contain national code. 3.3.4 Use RS232 monitor to set alert SMS The modem has 4 input ports. The input ports are connected to the supervised devices. If the message is less than 9 characters, the remain must be filled with white spaces (0020 in ASCII ) 3.3.6 Use mobile phone to change modem setting The sending SMS format is “##IDNMY’. Set N, M and Y to different value to get different modem setting. N=0 No message should be sent N=1 Send alert message only to the preset target one N=2 Send alert message only to the preset target two N=3 Send alert message only to the preset target three N=4 Send alert message to all preset targets M=0 Make no alert phone call M=1 Make alert phone call to preset target Y=0 The RS232 monitor does not display incoming phone call number Y=1 The RS232 monitor displays incoming phone call number 13
  13. 13. 4. Usage 4.1 SMS center The modem functions as a normal mobile phone. It is through RS-232 monitor to send and receive SMS message. Unicode is used for sending Chinese SMS while ASCII for English SMS. We provide software for converting Chinese character to Unicode code. The RS232 monitor will receive “TROK’ if sends successfully, otherwise it receives “TRFAIL’. In order to achieve successful SMS transition, the users should send SMS with 5 seconds interval between two consecutive sending operations. Note: the section of RS232 monitor is only relevant to the download application. The return SMS are: CC: aaa NC bbb LAC: ccccc CH: deee CID: fffff Note: aaa GSM MCC (MCC=mobile country code). i.e. 460 stands for China。 bbb GSM operator network code (MNC=mobile network code), i.e.: China Mobile net code 00,China Unicom net code 01 ccccc location area code,4bits HEX, changed when location updated d if in 900/1800MHz dual frequency, it is “h”; otherwise show blank eee Channel id used fffff Cell ID and sector ID To get alert message setting, the instruction SMS is ‘#*NB’. The return SMS format is: Port1 Port2 Port3 Port4 15
  15. 15. The SMS consists of four lines. Each line displays preset alert message for each port. If there is no preset SMS for a port, the corresponding line is empty line. To get a list of the preset target’s number, the sending SMS is ‘#*PC’. The return SMS is a string that contains the targets’ number. To get the Modem status, the sending SMS is ‘#*ST’. If the modem works properly, the return SMS is ‘STATUS OK’. Otherwise, no SMS returns. 4.1.4 Inquiry setting information through modem To get the information of the modem’s GSM network base station, the Hex string is ‘FD23234C41430D0A’. The return strings are same as to mobile phone (See above). To get the modem status, the Hex string is ‘FD232A 53540D0A’. The return string is ‘SYS OK’ when the system works properly. 4.2 Device monitoring Four ports are used for monitoring device. There are two ways to check upon the monitored device: through mobile phone or through RS232 monitor. Through mobile phone, the users send out the SMS “ #*IO”. Through RS232 monitor, users key in the string “ FD232A494F0D0A’. After receiving the query, the Modem returns a string automatically. The return string consists of 4 digits, whose value is either 1 or 0. The four digits represent for 4 ports. And 1 means the port in alert status and 0 means the port in normal status. 4.3 Device control Two output ports are used for controlling the connected device. The two ports can output high/low/positive pulse signal, users can control the device by sending command SMS. The command SMS are: Coding Meaning 511 Port 5 output logic high 510 Port 5 output positive pulse 500 Port 5 output logic low 611 Port 6 output logic high 610 Port 6 output positive pulse 600 Port 6 output logic low Note: To avoid missing alarm caused by interference to I/O ports, please connect the input port to GND when it is free, and leave the output port not connect when it is free. 16

To end a call, the string is: clean flag end call flag end flag FD 43414C4C48 0D0A 5. Troubleshooting 5.1 Startup problem The modem doesn’t work, but all indication lights seems ok. Solution: Check if SIM Card is inserted in and valid Check if the antenna is connected Check if the data line is connected correctly Check if the modem is set properly 5.2 Performance problem The modem can only receive data, but can not send out data. Solution: Check if the configuration is correct Check if the sending string/SMS is in right format. 17
