Summary More and more applications emerged with the rapid development of wireless data services, such as vehicle navigation, remote monitoring, wireless Internet access, wireless POS, etc. Thus, more and more devices need to be able to do wireless communication. With this background, we develop its MOD 9001 GSM Modem product. Users of this product can add wireless communication capability easily to their own products, and then, develop many applications. MOD 9001 GSM Modem uses the most advanced wireless communication technologies, providing both SMS data communication and voice communication functions. GSM SMS do not need to dial, and it is cheap, and can be widely used within a large coverage area. GSM SMS mostly fits the need of small amount of data transfer applications, such as vehicle scheduling, security monitoring, navigation, supervision, etc. Traditionally, the above applications use digital cellular, CDPD or other wire-line modem to do communication, and these technologies are of the disadvantages of high communication expense, limited communication range, dial before communications, etc. When we begin to use GSM SMS modem, all these problems disappeared. Please read this manual carefully before your installation, and please keep this manual for further reference. 2. Installation a) Open the package box and take the GSM MODEM out, check all components within the package box according to the packing list b) Remove the GSM modem’s back-cover with a screwdriver, open the SIM card holder, insert in a valid SIM Card provided by GSM network operator or service provider. Choice the serial port output voltage by properly set the jumps. Then, fix the back-over back. c) Fix the GSM-MODEM to a proper location and connect the antenna to its interface. d) Fix the data line to the GSM MODEM side first, and then, connect the other side to user’s equipment’s data port. e) Connect the GSM-MODEM power supply interface with the power adapter ’s output jack, and then connect the adapter to its power supply source. f) Make sure that all connections are correct and proper, then, turn on power.     • 6. Usage A. Power on initialization As shown in Fig. 1. After about 20 seconds power on operations including system self-testing, network registration, etc, the GSM-MODEM will output an ASCII string to its serial port “ DXY GSM-MODEM AA3.3 2003.12 PRID4930024025 SIM OK SYS L4 ” This means system initialization finished.     • B. Target ID setting As shown in Fig. 2 Please set the 3 target IDs according to your need in the Target ID setting Field, (In China, the id numbers should start with “86”). Whence finish entering ID numbers, please press the “SEND” button to confirm. ID numbers only need to be set in the first time you use the modem, and then there is no need to be set again.     • C. Sending data User data should be transferred to the GSM Modem according to following formats when user’s equipment need to transmit data by GSM SMS. Two types of formats are predefined to meet most customers’ requirements. A).Sending data to preset target IDs Example 1:We have a data string, say ‘Hello world’, need to be send to target(86) 13800138000 in English SMS. Please follow steps below (as Fig. 3): 1. Set the (86)13800138000 as Target 1 2. Input the data string 3. Choice the target ID number 4. Click SEND button, and the data string will be send. Fig. 3 Note: When the SMS successfully send, the GSM Modem will return “TR OK” in its serial port, otherwise, will return “TR FAI”.     • B).Sending data to target ID (non preset) Example 3:We have a data string, say ‘Hello World’, need to be send to target(86) 13800138003 in English SMS. Please follow steps below (as Fig. 4): 1. Input the data string 2. Choice the target ID number to 4 and input the 8613800138003 in the target number field 3. Click send button, and the data string will be send.     • D. Receiving data Example 5: The GSM Modem receives a data string ‘Hello World’ from another GSM Modem with number ‘13800138005’.(As shown in Fig. 5).     • Example 6: The GSM Modem receives a data string ‘Hello World’ from another GSM Modem with number ‘13800138005’. (As shown in Fig. 6). Configuration/Inquiring Modem settings A).Inquiring with your handset Send SMS string: ‘#*PN’ inquiring) to target GSM Modem, and the Modem will return ( a string that containing preset IDs B).Inquiring with a PC Fig. 7 As shown in Fig. 7, click the inquiring preset information button and the GSM Modem will return string that containing preset information.     • C).Preset target IDs with handset Send SMS string ‘##IDNMY’(Preset)to the GSM Modem, and that N means N=0:no message should be send N=1:send message only to the preset target ID 1 N=2:send message only to the preset target ID 2 N=3:send message only to the preset target ID 3 N=4:send message to all the preset target IDs M means M=0:do not make phone call M=1:make phone call to the preset number Y means Y=0:do not using caller ID Y=1:use caller ID When preset success, the GSM Modem will return ‘SET OK’ in its serial port D).Inquiring base station information code with handset From your handset, send SMS:“#*LAC” to the GSM Modem, and the GSM Modem will return following SMS strings: CC:aaa NCbbb LAC:ccccc CH : deee CID:fffff That means aaa GSM MCC (MCC=mobile country code). i.e. 460 stands for China 。 bbb GSM operator network code (MNC=mobile network code), i.e.: China Mobile. 00,China Unicom 01 ccccc location area code,4bits HEX, changed when location updated d if in 900/1800MHz dual frequency, its “h”; otherwise show blank eee Channel id used fffff Cell id and sector id PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www.pdffactory.com
    • E). Inquiring Modem Status with handset From your handset, send SMS:‘#*ST’ to the GSM Modem, and the GSM Modem will return strings: ‘SYS LX’ F).     • G).     • F. Dial, accept and hang up in PC Steps are as following (as shown in FIG. 10) 1). Input the callee number 2). Click Dial button and make a phone call 3). When the call is finished, click the hang up button to break the call Fig. 10 When the callee pick up and answering, the GSM Modem will return a string “CALLOK” to its serial port.     • Cautions 1).Please keep this manual for further reference. 2).Make sure you have read this manual carefully before your installation 3).Please leave the GSM MODEM and its power adapter in raining or humidity place 4).The GSM MODEM can only be used after connect to antenna and insert a valid SIM Card. 5).Please do not remove the shielding cover, no user maintainable component in it. 6).We will not fix the GSM Modem if it is opened by user, and no guarantee will be available too. 7).If customer meets problems with the GSM Modem, please contact us first. 5. Trouble shooting 1.Q: Why the modem doesn’t work, but all indication lights seems ok? A: First, check if SIM Card is inserted in and available, check if the antenna is connected. Second, check if the data line is connected correctly and if it is work Third, check if all preset data are Ok and if needed set them again. 2.Q: The GSM Modem can only receive data, but can not send, why? A: First, check if the configuration is correct and if needed preset again. Second, Make sure you use the right sending data format, and then, send again.
