Remember What Worship Is? <ul><li>The main Hebrew word: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Shacah – to bow down in obedient reverence </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The main Greek word: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Proskuneo – to bow down and kiss the hand of </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The Old English: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Derived from the word worth-ship. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Meaning to denote worthiness to the one receiving the honor or devotion. </li></ul></ul>
  3. 3. Remember God’s Word on Authority One God and one guide. (2 Timothy 3:16-17) <ul><li>Authority is vital: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>“ not beyond the things that are written.” (1 Corinthians 4:6) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Abide in the doctrine of Christ. (2 John 9) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Spirit and truth (John 4:24) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Do not transgress. (1 John 3:4) </li></ul></ul>

Bronson Alcott) <ul><li>Teaching Defined: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>It is the art of providing information to one person or a group of people. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>It is the proclamation of spiritual truths from God’s word to a person or group of people allowing (causing) each individual to reflect upon his/her life and working to grow closer to God. </li></ul></ul>
  5. 5. Teaching Throughout the Bible “… they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.” <ul><li>The Old Testament: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The command to parents. (Deuteronomy 6:4-9) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The command to grandparents. (Deuteronomy 4:9) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The life of the prophets. (2 Chronicles 36:15) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Hosea 4:6 </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>“ My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” </li></ul></ul>

  8. 8. What Should be Taught? The doctrine of man vs. the truth of God “ This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me: In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” (Matthew 15:8-9, ESV)
  9. 9. What Should be taught? The doctrine of man vs. the truth of God <ul><li>Matthew 15:1-9: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A tradition became truth. (Matthew 15:1-6) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Take special note of Mark 7:1-4 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Also note Colossians 2:8 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>“ See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ” </li></ul></ul>
  10. 10. What Should be taught? The doctrine of man vs. the truth of God <ul><li>Matthew 15:1-9: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A tradition became truth. (Matthew 15:1-6) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Take special note of Mark 7:1-4 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Also note Colossians 2:8 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Notice: teaching the tradition made worship empty. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Their lips were moving but not their heart. </li></ul></ul></ul>

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God (Psalms 143:10, ESV) <ul><li>Personal Questions: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Did Christ die for you to sit in a building? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Did Christ die for you to continue in the steps of the great teachers before us? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>When you teach are you simply paying “lip-service” to God? </li></ul></ul>
