  • 1. The Preparation for Jesus
  • 2. The Prophecy
    • A voice cries:
      • “ In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.”
      • “ And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
    Isaiah 40.3-5, ESV
  • 3. His Family
    • The Family of a Man Speaks Volumes…
      • Both parents were the descendants of priestly heritage. (Luke 1.5)
      • His parents were found righteous before the Lord. (Luke 1.6)
        • “… walking blamelessly in the commandments…”
        • “… and the statues of the Lord.”
      • His father served in the Temple. (Luke 1.8-9)

    • Where did John the Baptist grow up?
    • How did Zacharias and Elisabeth raise John?
    • Did John attend school?
    • Did John attend services in the temple as his father did?
  • 5. His Unusual Life
    • His words were spoken with power and authority. (Luke 3.2-18)
      • He challenged the crowds. (Luke 3.7-9)
      • His words brought memories of Elijah. (John 1.21)
      • Some though he may have been the Prophet or the Christ. (John 1.19-21)
  • 6. His Unusual Life
    • His life was lived in the desert. (Luke 3.2-18)
    • His clothes bore the mark of distinction. (Matthew 3.4)
      • A coat of camel’s hair.
      • A leather belt.
  • 7. His Unusual Life
    • His food was for the poor. (Luke 3.2-18)
      • Locust were viable food. (Leviticus 11.22)
      • Wild honey was readily available in the wilderness around the Jordan. (1 Samuel 14.25, 26)

    • He prepared the way for Christ.
      • He opened a highway for Christ. (Isaiah 40.3; Matthew 3.3)
    • He brought the preaching of repentance and baptism for remission of sins. (Matthew 3.6; Mark 1.4; Luke 3.3)
    • He shook up the world. ( John 1.19-36 )
      • “ Behold, the Lamb of God!”
