Homogeneous

  1. 1. Homogeneous Group 2
  2. 2. Definition: The prefix “homo” – indicate sameness Homogeneous – A homogeneous mixture has the same uniform appearance throughout. Many homogeneous mixtures are commonly referred to as solutions.
  3. 3. Mixtures • Two or more pure substances (elements or compounds) • Each retains its individual properties • Most stuff around you is a mixture, ex: air, most metals, etc
  4. 4. Parts of a Solution • solute – the part of a solution that is being dissolved (usually the lesser amount) • solvent – the part of a solution that dissolves the solute (usually the greater amount) • solute + solvent = solution
  5. 5. Identification Chart YES Uniform properties? If not, it’s a heterogeneous mixture YES Fixed composition? If not, it’s a homogeneous mixture Can be broken down chemically? If not, it’s an element If so it’s a compound
  6. 6. Homogeneous Mixtures • Does mix evenly or uniformly • Always contains a single phase (ie: salt water) • Known as a solution • May be solids, liquids or gases • Solid-solid solutions of metals are called ALLOYS
