Data Platform Roadmap Contact: Tiffany Wissner (twentzel@microsoft.com)
Before looking ahead at our Data Platform roadmap, let’s take a moment to look at where the business is today.
There is incredible momentum in our Data Platform business overall, supported by our in-market product portfolio, and here are just a few examples of our momentum.
Microsoft SQL Server, the heart and foundational of our Data Platform, continues to be the most widely-deployed database with 45% unit share.
In parallel, Microsoft continues to grow in market revenue share, growing at double digit growth, passing IBM as the second largest database per IDC and Gartner. Back in April 2014, Satya called out SQL Server as over a $5 billion business for Microsoft. [Note, the focus on revenue growth may not be appropriate for all audiences.]
Microsoft is also leading in all the major database workloads:
OLTP: For online transaction processing, SQL Server has grown from a departmental database to an enterprise database for your most demanding and mission critical workloads. Gartner has recognized this with the second position, just behind Oracle, in the Operational DBMS Magic Quadrant. Customers are recognizing this with over 900 migrations from Oracle workloads since 2012.
Cloud: Several years ago Microsoft released the first multi-tenant relational database, Azure SQL Database, and we have seen strong momentum with this business with over 1M databases in Azure SQL Database, as well as recognition by Forrester as the top leader in their Cloud Platforms Wave and Cloud Database Wave.
BI: With BI, the momentum here is growing leaps and bounds. Microsoft has been the leader in the Gartner MQ for Business Intelligence Platform for the last 7 years and also the Leader in the Forrester BI Wave! With the release of Power BI, we are also poised to reach the over 1.1 Billion in office users with 1 in every 4 enterprise customers deploying O365.
In sum, Microsoft is seeing tremendous momentum with the Data Platform both all-up and in the major workloads. We are leading in key areas today and are well poised for the future. To complement this, we have another major wave of technology ahead to deliver tremendous value to customers and partners.
Beyond business momentum, we see a greater recognition and understanding on the importance of data to our customers and to our company strategy. The presence of Satya Nadella, Kevin Turner and Quentin Clark (former Data Platform engineering VP) at the launch of SQL Server 2014 and the mentions of SQL Server as a growth engine for the company are prime examples of this.
Microsoft is delivering the assets you need for the mobile-first, cloud-first world – where a cloud that is not connected to apps, devices or sensors cannot interact with the real world, and likewise, a device that’s not connected to the cloud just cannot complete today’s new scenarios.
In this mobile-first, cloud-first era – data is at the intersection – with apps, devices and sensors creating those tremendous volumes of data I spoke about – to get value out of that data – you must be able to reason over it – tap into processing power to quickly.
Si le volume de données croit de façon exponentielle, celui des innovations sur la plate-forme de gestion des données chez Microsoft en fait tout autant.
Key Points:
Big data, including Hadoop and advanced analytics, is changing the way our customers do business. As they collect and store more data than ever before, they expect more from their data and want more insights from it, including being able to do real-time analytics over streams of data to complement their existing Hadoop deployments. Microsoft’s approach is to make it easier for our customers to work with data of any type and size — using the tools, languages and frameworks they want — in a trusted cloud environment.
To do this, we are delivering a comprehensive set of cloud solutions — from Azure Machine Learning, Azure HDInsight and our other Azure data services — to managed data services from our partners. We’re committed to supporting the broadest data platform so our customers find real value in the cloud, on their terms.
Microsoft’s data platform is helping customers create new solutions that bring together big data insights, predictive analytics and powerful visualizations, go here.
Talk Track:
Microsoft has products and services part of the data platform enabling customers to get a return on even this type of data even as it requires new technology, approaches, and methodologies.
APS: Microsoft’s big data appliance will not be covered today although it spans the C+E and T+A layers.
HDI: Given that HDInsight has been in market for over a year, we’ll only focus on it’s recently released new features.
DF: A new managed service for producing trusted information from raw data.
SA: A new managed service for real-time complex event processing.
Data is important to business. How you can get better returns on data?
The data lifecycle can be broken into three important parts:
First, how do you collect and then manage all of the data coming into the business? Think about the existing velocity and volume of data across a company. Now add new data types such as unstructured and streaming data into the mix. We need to make it easier to store all of this data and prepare it for the next step in the journey.
Second, when we have data collected and managed, we then need to make it useful to everyone in the organization. Our ability to transform and then analyze all data types more efficiently ensures that data doesn’t lose speed as it moves to the next step.
Third, now that the data is ready we can visualize that data and make decisions. Ask a question—and because we have done the good work to collect, manager, transform, and analyze that data—we get a visual, thought-provoking answer to our question.
When you combine all of this with the Microsoft data platform with an end-to-end approach that gives you the flexibility you need to derive results. Results that deliver the data dividends you are looking for.
Big Data can be broken down into incredible volumes, different shapes and sizes, and data in motion.
