Over 90% of disasters in Zambia and most Africa countries are climate related
Every year, millions people are affected by droughts, floods, wild land fires, and other hazards
Coping mechanisms and adaptation is low to the local communities in Zambia
Low level of education and knowledge levels of the people in the rural communities limit their capacity to adapt to extreme climate related events causing disasters
thus the need to educate and transfer knowledge and build capacity for the rural communities so that they have a better understanding.
ACTIVITIES OF ZAMBIA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT (ZMD)
with the help from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), ZMD has held workshops in several districts of Zambia in effort to disseminate, interpret, educate and enhance knowledge to the local communities
The rural communities unaccustomed to some disasters and without the coping knowledge to deal with the changing conditions are particularly vulnerable to their effects
During the workshops, scientists and trained journalists interpret using simple terms to the people
RANET- RA dio and inter NET Program is a communication system that combines the use of Internet, the Worldspace satellite digital radio broadcast and the FM community radio broadcasting system, to disseminate information to remote areas
RANET-Zambia Project: is a joint initiative of the Zambia Meteorological Department and community radios stations, with a mandate to disseminate accurately and timely weather/climate information on behalf of Zambia Meteorological Department to users in a precise and easy - to- understand manner and can be applied for the purpose of planning and decision making in the country.
HOW RANET - ZAMBIA WORKS => Zambia Meteorological Department collects relevant information from stakeholders and prepares for the RANET website. => Information relayed to uplink station at Pretoria, South Africa and Niamey, Niger, where it bounces to the satellite =>World space satellite broadcasts to RANET community radio station =>RANET radio station browses through the contents and selects the desired information for translation into a local language and then broadcasts on FM radio to the community =>RANET radio station also provides a forum of discussion by the community regarding issues affecting their livelihood.

RANET-ZAMBIA PROJECT (DISTRIBUTION OF MOBILE PHONES) Number of Peasant farmers that use to cell phones send feed back to the RANET-Zambia National Information Centre in Lusaka and the ministry of Agriculture regarding sending of rainfall and disaster-related information.
Community Radios in Zambia have proved to be the ideal way of disseminating information to widely scattered communities in local languages and in terms that are understood by them
There has been growing momentum in acquisition and use of climate information among all sectors of the Zambia population through this initiative of RANET project
RANET-Zambia project has helped in the improvement of local level climate risk reduction strategies including coping with the current climate extremes, and development of realistic climate adaptation strategies
This has help reduce impacts of climate related hazards and disasters to the vulnerable communities
