This document compares the vulnerability to natural disasters between developed and developing countries, using India and the US as case studies. [1] Both countries experienced similar destruction from cyclones/hurricanes, but the recovery patterns differed due to stronger backup systems in developed countries. [2] In the US, people recovered faster with state support, while in India recovery has been much slower and incomplete. [3] Reducing vulnerability requires global cooperation through sharing best practices, capacity building, and involvement of various organizations.

 In both these places havoc wrecked
by nature was same.
 It was the “vulnerable” population that
was affected.
 Both the places had the most socially
& economically disadvantaged
communities as well
 Loss of Life, Property, sense of
displacement

5. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE
VULNERABILITY PATTERN
• In USA the “Back-Up” system is good for
recovery. For example: people have got
back to their lives with state support.
• In India, the “Back –System” is not only
poor but close to being non-existent. For
example: people devastated from the
Gujarat earthquake have still not
recovered.

 Though there exists differences between the
developed & developing nation in

pattern are same!
 To “BRIDGE THIS GAP” it is important to
meet MDG Goal 8- “to develop a global
partnership for development” and a build a
culture of safety & preparedness at the
global level for humanity at large.
