    A Fresh(Ers’) Perspective - Presentation Transcript

    1. A Fresh(ers’) perspective
      • Many students start university
      • knowing how to
      • That does not help when
      • they are asked to
      • find 3 books, journal articles and websites
      • on a particular topic, or…
      • When they are not allowed to source
      • information from
      • well-known online encyclopedias
      • Without proper support and encouragement
      • students will forage for information
      • in what they know
      • and could leave university…
      • still knowing only
      • It does not have to be this way
      • If they are to be discerning users of information,
      • let’s help students
      • make sense of it all
      • Going beyond Google is not painful
      • or difficult.
      • Just think outside the
      • [search] box
      • There’s a whole host of discovery tools
      • connecting searchers to quality information.
      • For example:
      • There are also a number of full text resources.
      • For example:
      • You don’t need to use each one,
      • just what’s relevant.
      • MetaLib can help you make that choice
      • http://metalib.lboro.ac.uk
      • Your Academic Librarian can help too.
      • Workshops,
      • one-to-one consultations,
      • online tutorials…
      • Why is all this important?
        • “In the modern world, people increasingly need to develop skill in evaluating and managing information, in both their personal and working lives”.
        • HEFCE (2005) HEFCE strategic plan 2003 - 2008
