  2. 2. History<br /><ul><li>PSD Elementary Writing Committee was formed to examine best practices and the teaching of writing.
  3. 3. Committee was comprised of K-6 teachers, specialists, instructional coaches and administrators from across the district.</li></li></ul><li>K-6 Writing Plan Rationale<br />Provides a framework for the teaching of the writing process<br />Identifies common expectations based on the Writing GLEs<br />Provides a common language <br />
  4. 4. Why a writing plan instead of a boxed curriculum?<br /><ul><li>Allows flexibility in pacing, scheduling, integration and lesson sequence
  5. 5. Honors teachers’ professional judgment
  6. 6. Utilizes assessment data to meet student needs

Allows teachers to access a variety of writing resources</li></li></ul><li>K-6 Writing Plans<br />Plans are based on:<br /> Instruction – it’s not a scoring guide<br /> GLEs<br /> Essential Components of PSD Writing<br /> Six Traits <br /> Ideas<br /> Organization<br /> Word Choice<br /> Sentence Fluency<br /> Voice<br /> Conventions<br /> PSD Scoring Rubric (COS)<br />
  8. 8. All K-6 Writing Plans follow the same format:<br />
  9. 9. The Overview of Student Writers (from the GLE document) is located at the top of each plan.<br />
  10. 10. Elements of COS from the scoring rubric<br />are identified on the left side.<br />
  11. 11. Skills are organized by trimester and are scaffolded to reach mastery by the end of the year.<br />
  12. 12. Each trimester includes an instructional focus and GLE’s organized by Six Traits on the left…<br />(*Conventions are located on the back)<br />
  13. 13. …while the right column lists the Genres/Modes/Forms that should be taught. Bulleted examples are for reference – not all are taught each trimester.<br />
  14. 14. Assessment recommendations are also listed for each trimester.<br />
