    • RI perspectives from crop group parallel sessions Wheat State of the research by 2014 and beyond
    • Wheat Projects in the RI Molecular breeding and selection strategies to combine and validate QTL for improving WUE and heat tolerance of wheat in India – Vinod Prabhu Molecular breeding and selection strategies to combine and validate QTL for improving WUE and heat tolerance of wheat in China – Ruilian Jing Generating new wheat germplasm with enhanced drought/heat tolerance using AB genome genetic diversity – Satish Misra Breeder friendly high-throughput phenotyping tools to select for wheat adaptive traits in drought environments – Fernanda Dreccer
    • Overall • All projects have some activities that may need support beyond 2014 • In the wheat product catalogue one product deleted and several added (14) • Sources for documentation identified and actions set against names to provide data to IBP • Agreed that a more detailed costing of activities to be completed to be provided mid October to provide the basis of a plan going forward.
    • Molecular breeding and selection strategies to combine and validate QTL for improving WUE and heat tolerance of wheat in India Products forecast December 2014 Extensive phenotype on 145 lines evaluated at 4 locations for heat and drought QTLs for WUE identified in 4 MARS populations
    • Molecular breeding and selection strategies to combine and validate QTL for improving WUE and heat tolerance of wheat in India Activities beyond 2014 (or requiring additional resources) Sets of elite lines based on the released varieties HD2733; HD2967; GW322; GW366; PBW343 with pyramided QTLs for drought and heat tolerance from MABC (2016) Series of elite lines with accumulated with QTL for heat and drought coming from four MARS populations. DH derived lines from MABC from crosses of HD2967 with Babax, Excalibur and Krichauff
    • Molecular breeding and selection strategies to combine and validate QTL for improving WUE and heat tolerance of wheat in India Part of the Part of the project team – New Delhi
    • Molecular breeding and selection strategies to combine and validate QTL for improving WUE and heat tolerance of wheat in China Products forecast December 2014 A winter wheat cultivar released. Developed using MABC targeting QTL for stem water soluble carbohydrates and thousand kernel weight using 2 SSR markers (depending on 2013 results). Zongmai36 Extensive phenotype of 145 lines evaluated at 4 locations for heat and drought in China SSR markers for major QTL for plant height and drought tolerance in Chinese elite lines.
    • Molecular breeding and selection strategies to combine and validate QTL for improving WUE and heat tolerance of wheat in China Activities beyond 2014 (or requiring additional resources) Winter and spring wheat lines developed from MARS with stacked QTL for drought tolerance in 2 populations (2016) Three winter wheat MARS populations multiplied for phenotyping in 2017 (2016)
    • Molecular breeding and selection strategies to combine and validate QTL for improving WUE and heat tolerance of wheat in China Part of the project team
    • Generating new wheat germplasm with enhanced drought/heat tolerance using AB genome genetic diversity Products forecast December 2014 105 emmer based primary synthetic hexaploids (with phenotype) 48 Indian emmer wheats genotyped & phenotyped 1016 emmer based hexaploid double haploids with heat & drought phenotype from Australia 800 BC1F3:5 emmer based hexaploids with heat & drought phenotype from Australia
    • Generating new wheat germplasm with enhanced drought/heat tolerance using AB genome genetic diversity Activities beyond 2014 (or requiring additional resources) Genotyping of 1016 emmer based hexaploids to confirm AB genome diversity before extensive phenotyping in India Phenotyping 200 emmer based hexaploid subset in India for drought and heat (2015) Phenotyping of synthetic derived materials developed in India in India (300 lines) (2016)
    • Generating new wheat germplasm with enhanced drought/heat tolerance using AB genome genetic diversity Part of the project team – in the field in Maharashtra
    • Breeder friendly high-throughput phenotyping tools to select for wheat adaptive traits in drought environments Products forecast December 2014 Novel large-scale phenotyping methodologies for drought adaptive traits in spring wheat based on a combination of methods (Crop reflectance; canopy temp and visual observations) A database for up to 245 genotypes of the phenotypic expression for ground cover (GC), canopy temperature (CT), carbon isotope discrimination (CID), soluble stem carbohydrates (SSC) and yield and agronomic traits
    • Breeder friendly high-throughput phenotyping tools to select for wheat adaptive traits in drought environments Activities beyond 2014 (or requiring additional resources) Method combining image capture and crop simulation modelling to estimate patterns of WU and Transpiration Efficiency throughout the growth cycle Environment characterization of key locations in India & China using historical weather records to estimate most probable in season stress occurrences (new activity)
