It is an act whereby a person in spiritual authority, lays his hands on another in order to impart blessings, together, with prayer, and prophesy.
We must be ministered to before, in order to minister to others.
If a person who lays on his hands is not in an adequate spiritual condition, he will not be a channel for blessings
“ You made me; you created me. Now give me the sense to follow your commands.”
“ You formed me with your hands; you made me…”
2. Biblical proof of the practice of this doctrine.
A. In the Old Testament.
-Jacob blesses Ephraim and Manasseh (Gen 48:11-20)
-Moses anoints his successor (Deut 34)
B. In the New testament.
-Laying on of hands is emphasized in the ministry of the Lord Jesus.
Luke 4:40 “As the sun went down that evening, people throughout the village brought sick family members to Jesus. No matter what the diseases were, the touch of his hand healed every one.”
Luke 5:12-13 “In one of the villages, Jesus met a man with an advanced case of leprosy. When the man saw Jesus, he fell to the ground, face down in the dust, begging to be healed. “Lord,” he said, “if you want to, you can make me well again.” Jesus reached out & touched the man. “I want to,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared.
Mathew 11:5 “…the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the God News is being preached to the poor.
Jesus did all these things by laying his hands, releasing the anointing poured out on him by the Holy Spirit.
Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to preach Good News…”
3. Purpose of laying on of hands.
-It is practiced for various purposes.
A. To impart inner healing and deliverance.
-Inner healing and deliverance are 2 stages that every individual has to go through if he desires to be used by God & live in abundance.
“ The Spirit of the Lord is upon me , for he has appointed me to preach Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the downtrodden will be freed from their oppressors…”
B. To impart blessing
Jacob blessed Ephraim and Manasseh (Gen 48)
Mark 10:16 “Then he took the children into his arms & placed his hands on their heads & blessed them.”
C. To impart authority
D. To impart physical healing.
The spirit of sickness, like every unclean spirit, can be defeated through laying on of hands in the name of Jesus.
E. To impart the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
God’s purpose for every believer is that he experiences the fullness of the Holy Spirit and has an intimate relationship with Him.
Luke 24:49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised . But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”
Acts 1:8 But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere.
Acts 8:17 Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.
F. To impart gifts and commission people.
1 Timothy 4:14 “Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecies spoken to you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you.”
Through the laying on of hands, the Lord imparts life and a significant blessing that brings deliverance and inner healing to the person that has confessed his faith in Jesus Christ.
