How Springer started in the Nederlands <ul><li>1999: Bertelsmann takes over Springer Verlag in Germany and the company BertelsmannSpringer is started </li></ul><ul><li>2003: investment companies Cinven en Candover take over BertelsmannSpringer en Kluwer Academic Publishing (Dordrecht) and start Springer Science + Business Media, the second-largest STM ( Science, Technology, Medicine) publisher in the world </li></ul><ul><li>2005/2006: B2B publishing starts in the Netherlands under the name Springer Uitgeverij B.V. by successively purchasing Brouwer Media (Leusden), Reclameweek (Amsterdam), Axioma Communicatie (Baarn), Rendement & Checklist Publishing (Rotterdam), Fundament (Arnhem), Pronounce (Zaltbommel) </li></ul><ul><li>2007: purchase of Bohn Stafleu van Loghum (BSL) </li></ul><ul><li>January 2008: merger of Springer Uitgeverij with BSL and Axioma Communicatie, sale of Reclameweek </li></ul><ul><li>Springer Uitgeverij is a B2B division of the Springer Group , Springer Science + Business Media Dordrecht is a STM division of the Springer Group </li></ul>

Goals of Springer Uitgeverij <ul><li>Publishing is main activity, focus on opportunities in medical and health care market </li></ul><ul><li>to be a multimedia publishing company; apart from regular publishing products we invest in online publishing, E-learning, E-books, education and conventions & congresses for professionals in the medical & health care, and printing on demand </li></ul><ul><li>In the last year, there have been a lot of changes in the “back office” of the organisation in order to improve our processes ; for instance the outsourcing of financial and production activities to India, new software and workflow implementations, the start of harmonisation on HR-related issues </li></ul><ul><li>We work together with other Springer companies in order to achieve synergy ( IT system- and organisation, finance shared service center and production workflow) </li></ul><ul><li>Our goal for 2009: stability within the organisation and achieving our targets for current and new products and services </li></ul>

Outsourcing to India <ul><li>In Pune we work with two companies: Crest Premedia for pre-press activities, Infosys for our financial administration via IMAP </li></ul><ul><li>Springer has been sending interns from the Netherlands to Crest since 2007, initially via Springer Science+Business Media, since 2008 via Springer Uitgeverij </li></ul><ul><li>There are no interns working for us with Infosys, there is daily telephone contact between Houten and Infosys </li></ul><ul><li>There are two former interns now working with Springer, one in the production department as a projectcoördinator and one in publishing group 1, as an assistant-publisher. </li></ul>

Our products <ul><li>We publish books, journals, magazines, pda’s and (online) tools: </li></ul><ul><li>books for specialists and professionals but also patients in the medical, paramedical and mental health care; educational books for medical and healthcare professionals, all kinds of tests for the mental health sector (for instance for children with ADHD); </li></ul><ul><li>address lists and dictionaries as a book or for a pda; </li></ul><ul><li>All kinds of applications for a pda; </li></ul><ul><li>databases that members can use and an online library for professionals ‘vakbibliotheek’; </li></ul><ul><li>Magazines which are linked to online portals for professionals in the medical branch but also the logistics branch (f.i. Supply Chain Magazine, Mednet, Skipr); </li></ul><ul><li>These portals are linked to job vacancies websites; the medische banenbank (medical professions vacancies), a stand-alone product but f.i. also linked to our newest publishing product Skipr, a magazine and portal for management professionals in health care. </li></ul><ul><li>We publish around 1000 books a year plus reprints, and around 70 magazines per year. </li></ul>
