The global microgrid market is rapidly gaining prominence as supportive government policies in various countries encourage the setting up of renewable sources of energy such as wind and solar farms. The market in the US has established a clear lead, primarily engaging microgrids for remote and military applications. In Europe, microgrids are viewed as a suitable option for renewable energy integration. Emerging economies in Asia-Pacific, though, present the largest market potential as they look to counter power shortages and low grid connectivity.

Smart microgrid deployment for industrial and community applications is gaining mo- mentum for efficient energy usage. While the market is still in its infancy, it is expected to be well established by 2020. First-mover advantage will go to those participants who are venturing into the market in the short term. Micogrids Overview Microgrids are semiautonomous groupings of generating sources along with sinks at end-user nodes that are deployed and operated to benefit the installer. The supply sources include reciprocating engine generator sets, microturbines, fuel cells, photovoltaic cells, small scale renewable generators, storage devices and controllable end-use loads. Microgrids Provide: • Effective handling of total system energy requirements • Protection for critical loads while ensuring power quality and reliability over the entire system • Control and protection for the local electrical network, independent of the macrogrid

  4. 4. 4 Microgrids:Technologies that Power Energy Reliability, Self Sufficiency, Localities and Growth Opportunities Microgrid Challenges • Issues transitioning seamlessly from grid-connected to island mode using the available, but expensive, CERTS technology requires expensive and specialized equipment. • As a result of the complications associated with islanding, microgrids are implemented with non-synchronous connections and reconnections that lead to power loss during transition. • Lack of proven business model and funding systems. • Difficulty integrating microgrid with existing grid system, which requires sophisticated and expensive equipment, and is made worse by a proliferation of proprietary, custom interfaces that add significant cost to the system. Developing economies have huge growth potential for microgrid deployment to cater to rapid growth in power demand. Developing countries present huge growth potential for microgrid deployment, where this is aimed at meeting the growing power demand in countries with power shortages and low grid connectivity. The US is deploying microgrids for remote and military applications, while Europe sees microgrids as a better option for renewable energy integration. Microgrids are an attractive solution in commercial/industrial applications, however, the lack of proper market structure and standardisation does limit the use of microgrids for this application. Community/utility microgrids are predominant in Europe, with Denmark taking the lead.The prospects of microgrids being deployed by utilities is high, as many research activities are currently underway through utility networks. Microgrid usage for military power requirements is a key application, but active field testing and evaluation is focused on the US, with relatively little activity in Europe.
