Intel Capital, a unit of the Santa Clara, Calif., chip maker, has long been among the most active venture-capital investors. But it has only crossed the billion-dollar threshold for annual investments twice before, investing $1.2 billion in 1999 and $1.3 billion in 2000. By 2001, investments from Intel Capital had dropped to $350 million, according to data from the company. Intel Capital Blows Past $1 Billion Chip giant’s VC arm back to boom investment levels. December 3, 2006 By Sunshine Mugrabi Intel Capital said Friday it has surpassed $1 billion worth of investments in 2006. This makes this year the venture firm’s largest investment since the boom years of 2000 and 2001. The investments spanned the globe, though one area of intense focus is WiMax—something that has a strategic as well as an investment value to the firm. “We’re trying to encourage the network build-out and deployment of WiMax all over the world,” said Arvind Sodhani, president of Intel Capital. *Other marks and brands are property of their respective owners
