  • 14. Longford, Ireland Put on the map by Father Peter Cunningham Origins Originally founded by Viking raiders, Longford was called Long Phoirt, or Long port, or dock. Later the territory was controlled by the O’Farrel Clan who ruled over the countyfor a long term. Because of this Clan’s control Longford is also known as or Longford O’Farrell, and Longphort Ui Fhearghail "Fort of Farrell# after a Dominican Friary founded in 1400. Longford is the Cathedral Town. It is also bordered by the beautiful river Shannon. Business Longford is the second largest town on the N4 National Primary Route between Dublin and Sligo, as well as the convergence for the N4 and N5. The town has a population of about 13,000 with 1/3 of the counties’ population residing in the town.
