  6. 6. 2 April 2014 COL Gary Rosenberg/IMDR-ZA/ (315)-772-5501/ gary.a.rosenberg.mil@mail.mil 6 of 36 Fort Drum – Home of America’s Light Infantry Division FORT DRUM NEW YORK Background • Lyme Disease is the most common tick-borne infection in the United States and Europe. • Sixth most common reportable disease in the United States • Infection is caused by bacteria that is commonly transmitted by deer ticks. • The tick must be imbedded in the body for several hours to transmit the disease. • If left untreated, can cause serious long-term issues. • Lyme Disease can be treated by antibiotics.

  8. 8. 2 April 2014 COL Gary Rosenberg/IMDR-ZA/ (315)-772-5501/ gary.a.rosenberg.mil@mail.mil 8 of 36 Fort Drum – Home of America’s Light Infantry Division FORT DRUM NEW YORK Symptoms/Early Detection Early localized disease (3-30 days post-tick bite) • Red, expanding rash called erythema migrans (EM) or “Bulls-Eye” • Fatigue, fever, headache, neck stiffness, lymph node swelling Early disseminated disease (days to weeks post-tick bite) • Untreated, the infection may spread from the site of the bite to other parts of the body, producing an array of specific symptoms that may come and go, including: • Additional skin lesions in other areas of the body • Facial or Bell's palsy (loss of muscle tone on one or both sides of the face) • Severe headaches and neck stiffness • Pain and swelling in the large joints (i.e. knees) • Cardiac manifestations Late disease (months-to-years post-tick bite) • Untreated infection symptoms may include: • Intermittent bouts of arthritis, with severe joint pain and swelling • Chronic neurological complaints

Mountain Community Homes Residents: • All Recyclables can be combined in your recycle container, no need to separate. • There are special recycling programs in place to handle Hazardous Household Waste, alkaline battery recycling and electronics recycling. Please Recycle: Number 1 through 7 plastic TO PREPARE: Rinse bottles. Flatten if possible. There is a nominal fee. If scheduled on your regular trash pickup day, the cost is $8 per cubic yard plus tax ($15 per cubic yard if on another day). • Looking for an alternative? The Jefferson County Transfer & Recycle Station, located on Route 12, allows for the disposal of both bagged trash and bulky items such as furniture. Vehicles must be weighed in order to dispose of bulky items, and trash is assessed at $2 per 33 gallon bag (bags must be county trash bags). Full details are available by calling 785-9072.
