Savings Vs. Investing Savings accounts make sense as a way to build on your foundation of having goals, following a budget and insuring yourself from risk. Investing may offer a greater return, but at a higher degree of risk. Savings accounts are typically insured by the Federal Government, and offer a stable rate of return. This is perfect for an emergency fund, where you might need to access the funds quickly. Savings Bonds are not insured, nor can you access the funds as quickly as a savings account, but you can purchase them at discount to the face value, making this a safe and secure way to start to build up your savings accounts. Money Market Funds from a bank offer federal deposit insurance and can be accessed by check. Money Market funds from an investment company are not insured but may offer a higher rate of return. Certificates of Deposit offer a higher rate of return and are insured. Annuities and Government Securities Insurance companies offer a range of annuity products that have a secure rate of return with various maturities. Also included in annuities are variable annuities, where the rate of return is not fixed and the insurance company invests the principle amounts in a pooled investment with the goal of providing a greater return. Government securities include U.S. Treasury bills and notes, sold at action and resold in a secondary market. Hitting the Peak of the Pyramid  Investments at the top of the pyramid should only be a small part of your overall investments (Perhaps 5-15%).  With these investments, you have the potential of losing your entire investment, and the chance of higher returns.  Markets in these securities change quickly, so you either have to be an active trader or work with a trusted broker.  In some cases futures contracts or options on these contracts act a form of insurance for other risks in your investments. For example, if you own 100 shares of IBM, you might be able to sell an option (known as a “Covered Call Option” for those shares a specific price. If your shares never increase in value to the value of the covered call, you retain your shares and the proceeds of the option.
