The document discusses research on women, alcohol consumption, and aggression. It finds that approximately 2 billion people worldwide consume alcohol, with heavy drinking and binge drinking prevalent in the UK. Alcohol misuse costs the UK economy an estimated £21 billion annually in healthcare, crime, and lost productivity. The study aims to determine what predicts intoxicated aggression in women. It finds that women who score higher on measures of trait anger and impulsivity are more likely to experience aggressive thoughts and behaviors when drinking alcohol. High impulsivity and physical trait anger, as well as higher alcohol use, are correlated with increased reported aggression in women.
2. Approximately 2 billion people consume alcohol worldwide
(WHO, 2004), with EU being the highest consumer in the
world (WHO, 2010).
In the UK 6.4 million adults are classified as moderate to
heavy drinkers, and 5.9million reported binge drinking in the
previous week (Dingwall, 2006).
The estimated cost of alcohol misuse in the UK (healthcare,
crime, lost productivity) - £21 billion a year.
The cost of alcohol-related crime alone - £11billion a year
(Institute of Alcohol Studies, 2013).
3. Alcohol implicated in a significant proportion of aggressive and
violent incidents (Barnwell et al, 2006).
Extensive research on alcohol consumption and interpersonal
aggression – mainly using male samples.
Mixed results with regards to women – gender
differences/measuring different types of aggressive behaviour.
Aim: to see what predicts intoxicated aggression in a female
sample.
Hypothesis: high impulsivity and trait anger increase the
likelihood of aggressive response in women after consuming
alcohol.
4. Demographic information
Alcohol use - AUDIT (Babor, Higgins-Biddle, Saunders &
Monteiro, WHO, 2001) + 8 items.
Impulsivity - The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11, Patton,
Stanford & Barratt, 1995).
Trait Anger - The Buss – Perry Aggression Questionnaire
(Buss & Perry, 1992).
DV: The Alcohol Aggression Questionnaire (9- items self-
report measure of aggressive behaviour).
5. Aggressive thoughts
Do you experience, thoughts/feelings of an aggressive nature, such as the
urge to strike another person, while intoxicated?
Aggressive language
When out drinking, have you ever (or been reported to have) used abusive or
aggressive language towards others?
Aggressive behaviour
When out drinking, have you ever (or been reported to have) used aggressive
or violent behaviour towards others?
Incidents
When out drinking, have you ever (or been reported to have) engaged in
actual fights?
Have you ever been cautioned by the police for being aggressive after you
had a drink?
6. Based on Alcohol-Aggression scores- 2 groups:
o Aggressive
o Non-Aggressive.
Aggressive group higher scores on AUDIT, AQ Physical
Aggression, and AQ Hostility compared to Non-Aggressive
group.
Significant moderate correlations between outcome variable
Alcohol Aggression and predictor variables in the whole
sample and Aggressive group.
7. Regression analysis
o Whole sample – AQ Physical Aggression and AUDIT
o Aggressive group - AQ Physical Aggression and BIS Cognitive Complexity.
AUDIT scores only reached significance in the Aggressive
group.
8. Alcohol increases aggression in women that are high in
impulsivity and trait anger.
o Level of provocation experienced.
Looking at different types of aggression, not only physical.
More research needed only on female samples.
