  • CONCLUSION “You will be called upon under our system to pay compensation customers cannot just forgive these companies and let them kill our people!” - Rep. Paul Kanjorski.
  • MEDIA • Consumer reports such as “Consumerguideauto.com” and “edmunds.com” can randomly pick a manufacturer car and review it’s different aspects; from quality to handling performance to pricing. • They then proceed to give them a mark depending on how they performed overall. These marks help consumers take decisions at the moment of buying so it affects sales greatly. • If left unchecked, the media can and will destroy your name. Toyota’s pedal malfunction, for example. • With the latest Lexus GX460 incident, Toyota has taken a different approach to the problem. Learned from their mistake perhaps..?
  • GOVERNMENT • As in almost any other industry, the government plays a huge role as a non-market stakeholder. • US. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) an agency created to protect human health and the environment. • EPA fuel economy testing and results - Mandatory test for all car manufacturers in the country. • Affects how the brands car is perceived and in these times of recession it’s arguably the first number a customer researches before taking a purchasing decision. • Lobying plays a huge role in Toyota’s business. Not this time though.
  • NGO’S • NGO’s such as Green Peace keep car manufacturers under constant scopes and Toyota is no exceptions. • These Non-Market stakeholders have the power to destroy a companies name or put it on a pedestal. • Car companies constantly developing new technologies aiming to have the famed Zero-emission rating. • NGO’s also put pressure on the consumer’s in ways that they believe they’re being green by driving a hybrid, electric, hydrogen powered car, etc.
  • Safety Rating Institutions • One very well known institution is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). • Lately they don’t only rate impact resistance but also the technology that helps to prevent such impacts such as ABS braking systems and Stability Control Systems. • Each institute has a yearly “safety award” that mentions the top cars that are most likely to resist a high impact collision without causing any harm to the passenger and consumers actually keep an eye on this.
  • LABOR UNIONS • Unions such as the United Auto Workers (UAW) keep being alarmed by what will become of them because of car manufacturers constantly looking to cut costs. • Founded in order to represent workers in the automobile manufacturing industry, UAW members in the 21st century work in industries as diverse as health care, casino gaming and higher education. • If their demands are not met, they usually have the muscle to boycott a companies operations, so negotiations with these types of non-market stakeholders are of extreme importance
  • SOCIETY It’s important to show the society that your company does not only care about its profits but it can also contribute to it greatly, mainly by doing philanthropic acts, donating to a cause, opening or sponsoring schools or universities, helping minority foundations, etc.
  • SUPPLIERS • In a world where most companies, including car companies, outsource some of their parts, the companies must be extremely careful to avoid unnecessary and harmful media coverage. • These cases may not apply to the car industry but they are worth noting; Nike’s case where auditions found that most of the companies they were outsourcing to were having massive child labor which is illegal and even Apple has recently admitted that many of the companies they outsourced to were also using child labor and unfair wages. • Toyota Way Back
