North American Airlines Generally mild winter weather continued across North America in January. When winter weather did affect flights, it was in laces not usually subject to harsh weather. Record snow, ice and power outages slammed Seattle in January causing shutdowns at SEA airport and negatively impacting Seattle-based Alaska Airlines. - With only a few exceptions North America’s top airlines their strong on-time arrival performance in January. - Cancellations were up during the month - percentage-wise: 1.63% in January vs. 0.84% in December and 0.85% in November. - However, operated flights arrived within 15 minutes of schedule nearly 80% of the time in January, slightly up from December’s 78.94%. 2Wednesday, February 8, 2012

European Airlines: January Top On-time Arrival Performance European airlines turned in another strong set of on-time performance numbers in January with over 40 airlines delivering their passengers to their gates with better than 80% timeliness. The average OTP for the group in January was an unseasonable 82.82%, up from December’s 77.82% and November’s 80.78%. Asian Airlines: January Top On-time Arrival Performance Thanks to a significant expansion in our coverage data for Asian airlines, we’ve greatly increase the number of Asian airlines we’ll cover in 2012. Despite nearly doubling the number of airlines compared in this category, Japanese airlines remain dominant. JAL, ANA and their respective subsidiaries took the first eight of the the top 10 on- time performance positions in January. The average on-time performance rating among the 38 airlines we analyzed in January was 69.99%. Top 50 World Airports: January Departure Performance While Tokyo’s Haneda airport predictably stayed atop the list of the world’s 30 busiest airports with over 96% of its commercial flights departing within 15 minutes of schedule, US airports were again well represented among the top 10. Seattle’s Sea-Tac airport, a 2011 on-time performance award winner, is notably absent from the list due to record snowfall there in January. The average on-time departure performance among the top 30 airports in January was 76.08%, up from 74.33% in December and from November’s 73.47%. The average on-time departure performance for the group in January was 92.49% compared to 80.14% in December and 79.18% in November. High numbers for winter performance. About FlightStats On-time Performance Reports FlightStats on-time performance calculations are based upon data collected from a variety of sources - both primary and secondary. Our coverage of any single airline’s flights varies in percentage terms. In some cases, only secondary sources can be obtained that represent a subset of an airline’s total flight operations. This is especially true for certain low-cost airlines, notably Easyjet and Southwest Airlines. Therefore, the calculations represented here should, in general, be considered indicative of an airlines’s performance but not a definitive measure. We continue to work hard to fill in our coverage gaps. However, reaching 100% coverage will require the cooperation of some airlines that, at present, are unwilling to participate. 9Wednesday, February 8, 2012

About FlightStats On-time Performance Reports (con’t) These on-time performance reports for worldwide carriers and airports are generated from FlightStats Analytics. We track the performance of over 150,000 flights per day, archive the data for analysis and publication, and provide real time flight status to millions of travelers world wide each day. In contrast to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) on on-time performance which are filed with the BTS by the largest US airlines, we gather it ourselves in real time and archive the data for analysis and reporting. This enables us to cover a larger list of airlines and airports and to issue reports within a few days of the end of the reporting month. • BTS reports only on US airlines and airports. FlightStats gathers data world-wide • BTS airline performance reports are based upon data reported by 19 US airlines, 18 of which constitute 1% or more of total domestic scheduled-service passenger revenues. FlightStats reports cover 45 US airlines and are based upon data gather in real time from a variety of sources including the US FAA, airlines reservation systems, direct feeds from airlines and airports. • BTS US airport performance reports are based upon information provided by the 32 U.S. airports that account for at least 1 percent of the nations total domestic scheduled-service passenger enplanements. FlightStats equivalent reports are based upon archived real-time data covering the top 40 (i.e. busiest) North American airports. • Both BTS and FlightStats reports include information on the percentage of flights that arrived on time, were cancelled, were diverted. FlightStats breaks down the delays into 3 categories - late (15-29 minutes late at the gate), very late (30-44 minutes), and excessive (> 44 minutes). BTS simply reports that a flight is late (15 minutes or more). • FlightStats has more current data based upon real-time reporting. BTS data is published approximately 5 weeks after the close of a month as it relies on the airlines to file historical reports. • BTS also reports on baggage issues, passenger numbers, customer complaints and the causes of flight delays.
