  • The title of my short bit may be a bit misleading so let me clarify and tell you what my presentation is NOT about :\n- I’m not going to reveal Mark Zuckerberg’s new evil scheme to rule the world.\n- And I’m not going to uncover some even evil-er hidden language in Facebook’s TOS\n- Rather, I’m going to play Captain Obvious for a bit and illustrate the lesser known evil effect of Facebook on interpersonal relations and the human psyche.\n
  • To do this, I’m going to stage a little talk therapy session with me in the role of the dude on the leather sofa, and you guys’ll be my shrinks.\nSo here’s my story : I’m a divorcee. My wife left me 6 weeks ago after a 13 year marriage.\nJust so you know, today, I’m feeling right as rain. But obviously a month ago, I was an emotional wreck.\nNow one morning about a month ago, I was about my daily procrastination routine, which involves checking out this guy’s Twitter feed :\n
  • So this one morning, this is the daily Tweet I get from DearBlankPleaseBlank\n
  • This was SO tragically and cruelly à propos, and so perfectly timed, that it made me laugh out loud for the longest time.\n\n\n
  • But it also got me thinking about an evil of Facebook that I never really gave much thought about.\nWhen we think about “THE EVIL OF FACEBOOK”, the first thing that comes to the general public’s mind is “PRIVACY” and how poorly people manage their personal information and their privacy settings.\n
  • But for me that’s not all that big of an issue. \nMy view on this is STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES. \n
  • NO, the REAL evil of Facebook to me lies here. With this little linky.\nThis is the place where things can really go bad. \nThis is where we can partake in the disrespect of the privacy of OTHERS.\nTagging friends in a grade 4 class picture is all kinds of cute, and totally inoffensive.\n(Bonus points to whoever finds me in 5... 4... 3...)\n

  • But imagine had it been something like THIS.\nImagine being at this insane kegger, getting hammered, oblivious to the fact that a buddy of yours is taking pics.\nNow imagine this buddy posting this pic to his profile (STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES) AND tags you in it.\nWhile you are away on vacation, say, for a week, out in the woods WITHOUT INTERNET ACCESS.\nImagine the damage something like this could do before you could intercept it.\n
  • Going back to my story. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED TO ME ONE MORNING.\nMy ex, 2 weeks after our breakup, decided to change her relationship status.\nThis automatically altered MINE.\nUp to that point, practically no one in my surroundings knew about our breakup besides family and my closest friends.\n\n
  • Now all of a sudden all hell breaks loose, as you can imagine.\nHad my wife broken up with me in the days before Facebook, this would have been the equivalent of her picking up the phone and calling 500 people back to back to say “Hey guess what?!” \nThat’s INSANE!\n
  • To conclude, I don’t have any answers regarding this fundamental flaw in the way Facebook manages interpersonal dynamics. But I do know that had Freud been around today, he’d be scratching his head big time.\nThanks.\n
