So you’ve read my last article on the pro’s and con’s of working with Freelancers vs. Full time employees and decided that you want to try working with some freelancers. Great! In this presentation we will explore the steps you can take to make sure that you get the best freelancer for your money. So let’s get started!

  2. 2. how hiring a freelancer differs from hiring a full-time employee
  3. 3. Instead of posting full job details, filtering the applicants and setting up interviews, we now post a piece of the project that we want the freelancer to complete.
  4. 4. This way we don’t waste time on interviews. we give a test project to multiple freelancers, then we simply choose the one that does the best work for the full project.
  5. 5. step 1: Choose the site you want to work with

  7. 7. step 2: Post job Description ( start with a small piece )
  8. 8. You can post a small piece of the job and then hire the person to do the full job only after they have successfully completed the test job. The test job should still be be paid.
  9. 9. This is how the job posting should be broken down: 1.Give the post a compelling title. 2.Introduce yourself and the company 3.Give exact specifications of what you are looking for. 4.Convey that this is only the start, and what additional work you have for them.
  10. 10. 6. Ask them to provide a quote for this first test job. 7. Offer to answer any questions if anything is unclear.
  11. 11. paying by the hour vs by the project I personally always pay by the project. It doesn’t matter to me whether the freelancer Takes 1 or 10 hours to complete it, so long as is done right. This also saves me from having review time logs and gives the freelancer flexibility.
  12. 12. step 3: Filter the candidate responses
  13. 13. 1. 80% will be canned responses that haven’t really read your job posting. Throwthemout. 2.Filter out anyone who does not havea4starratingandhasn’tdone atleast6projects.
  14. 14. 4.Look at their work example/ portfolio. 5.Select the candidates that youwanttotryout.
  15. 15. Many people do not want to work with international freelancers. There is no question that it is easier to find better freelancers in United States (and other developed countries), but the cost is going to be substantially higher as well.
  16. 16. From my experience a good rule of thumb to follow is that the more discretion that you need a freelancer to take with a project, the more likely it is that you are going to have issues with freelancers in emerging markets.
  17. 17. A notable exception to the above is a virtual assistant firm based in El Salvador that I use for several ongoing projects and have had a lot of success with.

  19. 19. You can let the freelancing site you choose to work with do much of the heavy lifting for you. Don’t worry about spending a bit of money here and there on test projects for candidates that don’t pan out.
