Israel 20th Century Miracle Israel 20th Century Miracle Presentation Transcript

  • Israel: The Twentieth Century Miracle Who would have believed it?
  • Theodore Herzl
    • 1897- First Zionist Congress
    • Basel, Switzerland
    • Response to Russian anti-semitism
      • At Basel I founded the Jewish state…perhaps in five years, but certainly in fifty, everyone will know it.
    • Fulfilled fifty years and eleven months later. Who would have believed it would take two world wars and the Holocaust to bring it about.
  • Biblical Evidence for Restored Israel
    • Few Christians believed it in 1900. Replacement theology had taught most that the church replaced Israel.
    • Deut. 28- Two dispersions and returns
      • Deut. 30:3-5
      • Isaiah 11:11- a second time.
        • In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the remnant that is left of his people from Assyria, Egypt…from the islands of the sea.
  • 1917-1922
    • British Protectorate takes over
    • 1917- Balfour Declaration
    • Only 66,000 Jews in Palestine
    • Arabs living there considered themselves Syrians
    • 1922- a Palestinian state created with 77% of the mandate- Jordan
  • Times of Trouble
    • 1919- Chaim Weizmann, a Russian Jew said “We must have Palestine if we are not going to be exterminated.”
    • British army did not like keeping peace between 512,000 Arabs and 61,000 Christians and 66,000 Jews
    • 1920- Arabs sacked Jewish quarter of Jerusalem- stirrred by Haj Amin Husseini
    • Grand Mufti of Jerusalem
  • Immigration in the 20’s
    • America closed doors in 1924
    • Hebrew University founded in 1925
    • Thousands including intellectuals immigrated to Palestine
    • Tensions erupt into violence at the Wailing Wall in 1928. 133 Jews and 110 Arabs killed.
    • Two Jewish defense organizations started in 1930- Haganah and Irgun (violence)
  • British Cold Feet
    • White Paper of 1930 favored Palestinians- opposed Balfour declaration
    • Hitler takes control of Germany in 1933
    • 50,000 immigrated in thirties
    • Jewish population at 400,000
    • 1935- David Ben Gurion
      • The disaster (anti-semitism) is not limited to Germany alone. Hitler’s regime places the entire Jewish people in danger. Hitler’s regime cannot long survive without a war of revenge against France, Poland, and Czechoslovakia….perhaps only four or five years stand between us and that awful day.
  • Voices in Late Thirties
    • The Mufti stirs up trouble, even from exile
    • Weizmann speech to British Commission:
      • Everything east of the Rhine is today in a position of neither life nor death…six million people for whom the world is divided into places where they cannot enter, and places where they cannot live!
    • David Ben Gurion on need for homeland:
      • The Bible is our mandate… it was only the recognition of that right which was expressed in the Balfour declaration.
  • The Struggle of Partition
    • Hitler’s Holocaust- as Nazi Germany instituted anti-semitic laws: immigration was restricted and the Jews were trapped.
    • Hitler blamed the Jews for his war
    • Some freedom fighters in Europe helped 10,000 or so escape to Palestine (including Menachem Begin who was in the Irgun and later Prime Minister in the 1970’s)
    • Six million perish in the Holocaust
    • Who would have believed it?
  • Britain Appeals to the U.N.
    • Britain caught between Jewish refugees and Arab oil
    • 1946 Jewish extremists blew up King David Hotel in Jerusalem, killing 80
    • Haj Amin stirs up violence and recruits Arab Legion to control the land
    • Britain submits Palestine to UN and withdraws in 1947
  • Power Vacuum and Independence
    • General Assembly and Russia vote in favor of Jewish state
    • Plans for statehood (Illegal immigration)
    • As statehood approaches in May of 1948, 700,000 poorly armed Jews face 40 +million Arabs
    • The Mufti plans to drive the Jews out of Jerusalem and destroy them
  • Can a nation be born in a day? Isaiah 66:8
    • Who has ever heard of such a thing? Who has ever seen such things? Can a country be born in a day or a nation be brought forth in a moment? Yet, no sooner is Zion in labor than she gives birth to her children.
    • May 14, 1948- Ben Gurion declares statehood
    • The U.S. under Truman recognizes the state
    • Five Arab nations declare war
    • The Dead Sea Scrolls discovered in late 1947!
    • The oldest existing scroll of Isaiah!
  • Arab Setbacks
    • They attack piecemeal. Jealousy and suspicion
    • Israeli airforce defeats Egypt
      • Four German Messerschmitts
      • Truce declared by U.N.
    • Arab propaganda encourages Arabs to leave Israeli territory, 500,000 become refugees in Gaza and West Bank
    • Surrounding Arab nations refuse to accept them- the Arabs lose, call it Great Disaster
    • Who would have believed it?
  • The Remnant survives
    • Fulfillment of Jer. 16:15ff?
    • Demonic anti-semitism comes from Germany to Middle East in form of Jihad.
    • A Secular Nation- Dry Bones come together
    • Prelude to Romans 11:23-32
    • Times of Gentiles end in 1967- next fulfillment
  • 1947-1967
    • Population doubles by 1951
    • Egypt and Jordan attack in 1956. Both fail.
    • In 60’s terrorist organizations form like Palestine Liberation army (Arafat)
    • 1967- Egypt masses forces along Sinai, Syria masses forces on Golan heights
    • Israeli air force launches pre-emptive strike and destroys Egyptian air force on ground
  • Six Day War
    • Jordan And Syria enter war, not knowing about Egypt’s defeats.
    • They are turned back in six days and Israel takes Sinai, Gaza strip, Golan Heights, Jerusalem and the West Bank!
    • Who would have believed it?
    • Arabs within territory are given rights of citizenship
    • Refugees used as pawns and multiply to several million (today)
  • Yom Kippur War-1973
    • Arabs attack on Jewish holy day.
    • 1100 Syrian tanks against 157 Israeli in North
    • Holding action for two days
    • The tide turns and Israel wins on the battlefield.
    • 2,000 tanks in Sinai- Egypt loses 264, Israel 10
    • Israel fights to stalemate but is safe!
    • Public opinion against Israel- Arab oil embargo! (They couldn’t win on field, so they used oil for blackmail.)
  • Arafat’s strategy
    • He would talk about peace in return for land. (Israel had already given Sinai back twice.)
      • Rallying anti-Israeli Western powers to pressure Israel. Once he got a toe hold on land, he would then use it for renewed attacks..in short, taking Israel in phases. It is a clever strategy that is spelled out in detail in many public (Arabic) speeches, just as Hitler outlined his strategy in Mein Kampf.
  • False Peace
    • 1978- Egypt’s Anwar Sadat initiates peace with Israel’s Menachem Begin with help of Jimmy Carter
    • Three years later Sadat was dead and hostilities resumed from Southern Lebanon, this time from the Hezbollah, another terrorist organization. Israel occupied southern Lebanon to keep Hezbollah from attacking there
    • Land for peace does not work. Muslims continue to press for annihilation. This is taught in their schools in most Arab countries. Israel does not even appear on their maps!
  • Shift to war of terror.
    • Terrorism has always been Muslims’ fall back.
    • When Israel pulled out of Southern Lebanon, Hezbollah reoccupied.
    • When Israel pulled out of Gaza, rocket attacks began. 2006 saw attacks from both sides.
    • Two state solution is not working. Palestinians never keep their promises.
  • Today
    • Israel has five million Jews and one million Arabs within her territory. Those Arabs who live peacefully are gaining a higher standard of living.
    • Zechariah 12:3- continues:
      • On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered together against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for the nations. All who try to move her will injure themselves.
  • Who would have believed it?
    • God has restored his Old Covenant people to the land and protected them for sixty years!
    • Many nations have tried to move them and failed.
    • The U.S. vacillates.
    • Ariel Sharon cooperated with Bush in trying to move toward a Palestinian state, but Arafat could not control the factions within it.
    • Ehud Ohmert is now prime minister.
    • Arabs have exploited the situation once again in 2006.
  • Meanwhile…
    • The number of messianic Jews is growing by thousands in Israel.
    • Last June a 24 hour Christian satellite station began broadcasting.
    • Wars and terrorism have softened the hearts of Israelis toward the gospel.
    • Linda Ohmert, not yet messianic, comes to Columbus regularly and has been in our church!
  • What’s ahead?
    • Zechariah 9:10-13:1
      • And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son…On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity.
  • Can we be part of it?
    • Jews for Jesus will be here in April.
    • Paul Wilbur and other messianic speakers will be here in September for a conference!
    • Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
    • Pray for America to support Israel, despite pressure from most of the world and the Muslim terrorists in Iraq and Iran.
    • Paul’s concert tour in Israel in June 2008.
