“ Founded in February 2004, Facebook is a social utility that helps people communicate more efficiently with their friends, family and coworkers. The company develops technologies that facilitate the sharing of information through the social graph, the digital mapping of people's real-world social connections. Anyone can sign up for Facebook and interact with the people they know in a trusted environment. Facebook is a part of millions of people’s lives all around the world. Facebook is a privately-held company and is headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif”. [i ] [i] http://www.facebook.com/press.php

How has Facebook achieved success? Source: Wired “ Facebook thinks its members will turn to their friends—rather than Google's algorithms—to navigate the Web. It already drives an eyebrow-raising amount of traffic to outside sites, and that will only increase once Facebook Search allows users to easily explore one another's feeds.”

    4. Why the Facebook platform? What is Facebook Connect?
      • To put it simply: A system that allows integration of the Facebook platform into third party websites.
      • It allows the third party site access to:
        • Facebook User’s identities
        • Facebook User’s friends and data about them
      • It then allows the third party site to:
        • Distribute information – stream stories, notifications
        • Integrate into Facebook – FBConnect integration has all the same properties as if it were a Facebook application (profile boxes and tabs)
    5. Why the Facebook platform? Tripeedo – Facebook Connect Example User is asked to log into Tripeedo with their Facebook credentials rather than their Tripeedo details.
    6. Why the Facebook platform? Tripeedo – Login using Facebook Credentials After user clicks connect, frame pops up asking the user for their facebook login details.
    7. Why the Facebook platform? Tripeedo – Friends Suggested Near London 1. The user enters a flight route 2. Facebook Connect allows Tripeedo to call up a list of the user’s friends at the specified destination.
    8. Why the Facebook platform? Tripeedo – Facebook Feed If the user wishes to tell those friends they can post directly to their friend’s facebook wall from Tripeedo.
    9. Why the Facebook platform? Why Facebook Connect?
      • Current online social experience is disjointed as consumers have memberships across a whole range different sites and networks.
      • “ A simple set of technologies that enable a portable identity will soon empower consumers to bring their identities with them — transforming marketing, eCommerce, CRM, and advertising .”
              • - Jeremiah Owyang for Forrester
      • Enabling Technology is Interoperable IDs = Facebook Connect, Twitter OAuth, OpenID
      • Facebook Connect seems to be winning – Over three hundred sites currently active, like Digg, Lollapalooza, CNET etc. but sites are slow to introduce it and no one has unleashed it’s full potential.

      • Be first to buy into a swarm and enjoy a lower price
      • If you choose to wait you can buy into swarm at a later stage and all members of the swarm will enjoy a lower price.
      • Grow the swarm by sharing the information with friends through FBConnect & Twitter.
      • Swarm closes after 15 buyers or after 72 hours
    12. Era of Social Context Source: Forrester TV offers personalized interactive channels for viewers. 13. Digg.com Source: Digg
      • Facebook’s 200+ million members can login and start using the site without having to go through sign up procedures.
      • User can choose to automatically follow Facebook friends, or invite your friends to Digg from your Facebook Connect settings page in profile page.
      • The Digg user doesn’t have to spend time building up his friend network on the site as he can view what his facebook friends are doing on Digg.
    14. Era of Social Commerce – 2011 - 2013 Source: Forrester A new PR agency emerges that represents online groups and not brands. Other Media Social Networks Brands Consumers Descriptions Offers features to help with the product design and vendor management Lean on groups to define products Peers define products and purchase in groups Online groups, supplants brands
    15. Why the Facebook platform? Privacy Concerns Do you own Facebook or does Facebook own you?
      • Issues over how much of your data remains on Facebook platform if user decides to leave.
      • Do users understand or even trust third party websites with their Facebook password & credentials?
      • Personal Issues: Facebook Connect can be beneficial for sharing information with friends and family but what about information that the user doesn’t want to share?
