  2. 2. Semantic Web Linked Data what is it all about ?
  3. 3. Semantic WebMachines will be able to understand our information...
  4. 4. Semantic WebMachines will be able to understand our information... … but not in a AI way
  5. 5. Semantic Web Semantic is about Logic pr e dica te object subject RDF (Resource Description Framework) / triples Ontologies / VocabulariesMaking the logic of our information understandable to machines
  6. 6. Semantic Web The Web is what this is really about !
  7. 7. Semantic Web The Web is what this is really about !Web identifiers (URIs)Web architectureHTTP protocolW3C standards

  11. 11. Dataset applications“collections of structured metadata —descriptions of things, such as books … acollection of library records”W3C Library Linked Data Incubator GroupCatalogue data is mapped to RDF elements frommultiple namespacesMix-and-matchIFLA elements available in FR and ISBD namespaces
  12. 12. Element sets“classes and attributes used to describe entitiesof interest … elements to be used by others todescribe such entities”W3C LLDMetadata schema entities represented as RDFclassesEntity attributes (fields) and relationshipsrepresented as RDF properties
  13. 13. Element set applicationsInteroperability of schema represented byrelationships between RDF classes andproperties in respective schema namespacesUsing ontological properties from W3C namespaces • E.g. RDF Schema (rdfs) subPropertyOfDatasets can be processed against ontologymaps to generate new data triplesThe semantic in Semantic Web!
  14. 14. Interoperability Audience element ontology:•ISBD•MARC21 (m21)•RDA•Dublin Core terms(dct)•Unconstrainedcommons
  15. 15. Value vocabularies“a controlled list of allowed values for anelement … include: thesauri, … authority files, …,and other types of knowledge organizationsystems.”W3C LLDE.g. MulDiCatMultilingual dictionary of cataloguingUseful for namespace translations, user displays, etc.
  16. 16. ISBD area 0 value vocabulariesContent form and media typeDevelopment of RDF mappings to the RDA/ONIXFramework for Resource CategorizationRDA content form and media type already mappedImproves interoperability of datasets andformat-based resource discovery
  17. 17. RDA/ONIX Framework as hub

  28. 28. Linked Data at the National Library of SpainHow it all began: Project achieved between the Ontology Engineering Group of the Politechnic University of Madrid (http://www.oeg-upm.net/) and the National Library of Spain. The work began at the beginning of 2011 as a small proof of concept: publication in LD of works by/related to Cervantes Eventually, it evolved into a bigger part of the catalogue. It was presented en December 2011, as datos.bne.es
  29. 29. Linked Data at the National Library of SpainWhats in now: Authority file. Bibliographic records of modern and ancient monographies, sound recordings and printed music 2.4 million bibliographic records, and 4 million authorities records 58 million triples Links to VIAF, DNB, Dbpedia, SUDOC, Libris
  30. 30. Linked Data at the National Library of SpainData model and vocabularies: Based on IFLA models and vocabularies. FRBR as reference model FRBR, FRAD, FRSAD and ISBD, as published in OMR as vocabularies.
  31. 31. Linked Data at the National Library of SpainHow we looked at the data: Bibliographic record → frbr:Manifestation Authority record → frbr:Work, frbr:Expresion, frad:person, corporate body, frsad:Thema Access points in bib. records: relationships
  32. 32. Linked Data at the National Library of SpainHow we migrated: Mapping 1: Classification. Mapping 2: Relationships Mapping 3: Annotation
  33. 33. Linked Data at the National Library of SpainHow we dealt with RDF (Marimba):More details on http://www.slideshare.net/DanielVilaSuero/datos-enlazados-bne-and-marimba
  34. 34. Linked Data at the National Library of SpainPublishing: Datos.bne.es site. Datadumps SPARQL Endpoint Included in Datahub and Bibserver
  35. 35. Linked Data at the National Library of SpainTo do list: More research and refinements needed in annotation and relationships. Include all kind of resources. Design and experiment with attractive human- readable interfaces More links
  36. 36. Linked Data at the National Library of SpainMain features: Constructed using IFLA standards and vocabularies FRBRization Produce Linked Data and FRBRization from flat MARC21 records
