  • 3. IS WAVERLY A FLAT OR ROUND CHARACTER? EXPLAIN WHY YOU MADE YOUR CHOICE.
    • Waverly is a round character because she is 3-dimensional, she has good and bad qualities, her goals, ambitions and values change throughout the story. Waverly changes as a result of what happens to her.
  • 4. HOW DOES THE STORY END?
    • Waverly ponders her next move- in chess and in life.
  • 5. AT WHAT POINT IS THE CLIMAX REACHED IN THE STORY? EXPLAIN.
    • The climax occurs when Della discovers the coveted combs. This is the highest emotional moment in the story because she realizes that in order to give Jim what she wants she must give up her most prized possession.

    • The story takes place on Christmas Eve in a city (we will assume New York City- based on the descriptions) around the turn of the century.
    • The apartment is small, shabby little couch, letters fading on the name Dillingham- now just a D.

    • Similes - A figure of speech which involves a direct comparison between two unlike things, usually with the words like or as.
    • “ I want today to be far away already, far away like a runaway balloon …” – Between Rachel and a runaway balloon.
    • “ I want today to be far away already, far away like a runaway balloon , like a tiny o in the sky …” – Between Rachel and a tiny o in the sky.
