  1. 1. Customer: Michael BoglinoAnimal: RaccoonReport by: Felicia FerentinosRaccoon Report_______________________________________________________A raccoon is an omnivore which means that these animals will botheat plants and other animals. They will eat anything that also meansthat they will eat frogs, crayfish, birds, mice (and other smallmammals). When they are eating vegetation then they will eat fruit, nuts, plants, crops and they will also eat garbage. Raccoons willusually find their food in water areas. Raccoons will usually eat theirmeals in the water. These animals will use their lighting-quick pawsso that they can grab a crayfish, a frog and the other aquaticcreatures. When these animals are on land then they will normally eatmice, insects. The raccoons can find these animals in their hidingplaces and they will also find them in raid nests they usually go inthese places to eat some tasty eggs. These animals will also eatplants and fruit. These animals also eat fish, nuts, berries, seed, small birds and they will also eat bird eggs. These animals also eatreptiles to. These animals will also eat acorns to. Raccoons are reallywill known to wash their food. They are also known for pulling foodapart so that they can replace the inedible bits. The only time whenthese animals can hunt is at night that means that these animals arenocturnal. Before raccoons start eating their food they will usuallywash or douse their food into water before they can start eating it.Raccoons are not known for performing douse. But they will oftenclean their food this is an unlikely reason. Lots of studies have beenfound that the raccoon is in engage for doing dousing motions whenthey are in the water. Researchers have found that the raccoons arecaptive are more likely then the raccoons that live in the wild forhaving douse food. Raccoons will normally forage their food and theywill usually find their food close to water. Raccoons have been knownto washing their food before they start eating it. Even through thisbehavior is extremely not known but it is thought that their sense oftouch that is on their front paws of the raccoons are heightened whenthey are wet. It has been suggested that the raccoons that arecaptive are mimicking fishing and their shellfish-foraging behaviors. Italso means that they are searching for materials that they do notwant. Water maybe their heighten for their sense of touch. Theseanimals can be found in north and in South America and they can be
  2. 2. found on the tropical islands. These animals can be found on lots ofdifferent habitats and those habitats are marshes, forests, prairies, cities and suburbs. Raccoons can grow about 24 to 36 inches long this is how longtheir tail is. Raccoons can live about 15 years and they can also liveabout 5 to 6 years to. When they are in the wild then they will live for6 years. The normal life span for a raccoon is 5 years. When they arein the wild then they will live for 2 for 3 years. Raccoons are known tolive for 12 years when they are in the wild to. But there are someraccoons that can only live for a few years. They can live about 13 to
  4. 4. 16 years when they are in captivity. They can also live about 2 to 3years that is also their average life span to. When they are in the wildthen they can live for 2 to 3 years and when they are in captivity thenthey can live for 20 years. The raccoons that live in the northern partsof their home range. They will start to gorge themselves when thespring and the summer come so that they have some place to storetheir body fat. Then when the winter comes then they will start to fallasleep in dens. There are about six species of raccoons that live indifferent locations of the world. The northern raccoons normally live inNorth America. The other species of raccoons live on tropical islands.Raccoons usually look for food for when it gets dark that means thatthese animals are nocturnal. That means that they are active at nightand they sleep during the day. These animals will normally sleep inhollow trees, wedged that are between branches. They will usuallysleep in burrows when the weather is cold. Raccoons will normallymake their dens in hollow trees, rock crevices, and they will alsomake dens out of other animal burrows. Or even buildings will alsoturn out to be dens for raccoons as well. They will remain in thesedens for 1 to 2 days are unless it is during rearing of their young andthey can also use their den to stay safe from harsh weather. Theseanimals do not hibernate which means that these animals are activeall time of the year. These are the raccoons that live in Southernrange but they will emerge during the winter. The raccoons that live inthe northern range they will usually go for warmer weather. That ishow they can live off their fat so that they can restore them losing asmuch like 50% of their body weight. Raccoons have first discoveredthat they have rabies was in Connecticut in the year of 1991.Raccoons carry this Disease through the northeast of the UnitedStates but raccoons are not the only animals that have this disease. The other animals that have this disease but they are mostlymammals and these mammals are dogs, cats, Skunks, foxes, woodchucks and livestock all of these animals have been infectedwith rabies. This disease may cause unprovoked aggression, impaired movement, paralysis or it may also cause lack ofcoordination, it may also cause a really weird friendly behavior and itwill also cause disorientation. On the front of the raccoons paws andthis is also on the hind paws to. On the front of the raccoon’s pawsthe hind paws also have this to. On each off their front paws theyhave 5 digits on them. The raccoons can use their front paws so thatthey can grasp and manipulate food. These animals are great
  5. 5. climbers but they will usually climb up a tree with their head first. There are about 10 different species that are in the size of their rangebut most of them are a lot different by their appearance. All of theseraccoons can be found on both Americas. The most important sensefor a raccoon is their sense of tough it is really important for thembecause on their front paws they are covered with a spiny coat that isuse to protect them when they are not being used for aid food.Raccoons are some of the few animals that are really good at beingfamily pets then after that they will be sending back to the wild. Butthe male raccoons can be kept as a pet because the adults can bereally aggressive when they get older and they will have to be setfree. Raccoons are related to the weasel and the bear family. Theyhave a really good sense of hearing, sight and they also have a reallygood sense of touch but they do have a really good sense of tasteand smell. Raccoons can both be awake by night and day but theyare most active at night that means that these animals are nocturnal. They will also go out during the day to. But that does not mean thatthey are diseased. Raccoons will normally just do it at their feedingtime especially when spring comes and also when they are rearingtheir young. They may even dig their dens during the coldest times ofthe year like in the late fall and in the winter but that is not truehibernation because these animals will usually wander out when thetemperature gets warm. Raccoons are not a good animal to touchbecause they have rabies. Rabies is a delay disease that is causedby a virus that can easily attack the nervous system. The animals thathave this disease are normally the raccoon, skunks, foxes and bats. This virus is located in the saliva and in the nervous tissue of a rabidanimal. Any contact with these animals will be reducing with the riskof having rabies. Do not get any contact with a sick or an apparently(orphaned) animal. Always stay away from animals that have rabiesbecause they may act strangely, especially those are unusuallytame, aggressive or even paralyzed. Always be suspicious when thedaytime comes because that is how that you can get in contact withraccoons but they are most active at night. In the state of New Yorkthere are more last then 50 animals in that start that are confirmed tohave rabies. Every year raccoons have been getting this disease. Butraccoons are not the only animals that have this disease the otheranimals that have this disease are mostly mammals like cats, dogs, ferrets, and livestock may have rabies. It is really important that youhave all of your dogs and your cats regularly vaccinated for rabies. If
  6. 6. you’re pet has gone with a fight with another animal. So to hold yourpet you have to wear gloves so that you can handle it. You will alsohave to isolate it from other animals and people. Do you findinformation about how your pet can survive then you will have to gocall your country health department or any other animal control officerso that you can get any instructions? If you or anyone that has beenbitten or even scratched by a raccoon then they will have to washtheir wounds thoroughly with soap and water. In the winter raccoonscan restore their body fat. These animals do not hibernate and theseanimals are not really active during the winter time to. They willusually sleep when the winter comes but they will be easilyawakened. These animals can be really small but that does not meanthat they are not good at fighting. These animals are amazing fightersthey have to be good fighters because so that they can protect theiryoung from predators. The size for a raccoons territory is reallydepends on how much food that the area has but the usually size forterritory is 2-5 square kilometers. These animals do not make theirown dens. They will often steal a den from other animals like a skunkand a fox. They will sometimes fall sleep during the day. But they donot sleep in a den they will usually sleep in a fallen log or a tree thathas fallen to. The sounds that a raccoon will make are hiss, growland they will also make a screech sound like an owl will make. Thepredators that they will face are coyotes, foxes, great horned owls, bobcats and even dogs will easily kill a raccoon. Raccoons can runfor 15mph. That is their top speed. Raccoons will start to mate inFebruary to March. A male raccoon will travel in really long distancesand then he will have to mate with lots of females, after the gestationperiod which is in 63 days. The litter of kits will be more than two tosix babies that will make a littler in a raccoon family. A female willnormally give birth in a hollow tree or in a den (which can woodchuckburrows, culverts, or under buildings). When the young has reachfour or to six months old then they will be ready to be on their own.Raccoons will also mate in January or in February. A female will havea littler of four to five cubs. They will start to be born in April and inMay. Raccoons will have their babies in a hollow tree, in groundburrow or in caves. They will travel along the streams or the rivers sothat they can get some food. Even through raccoons live near forestsnot streams. The males do not take any part of taking care of theyoung. In the late summer. Then the littler will be weaned and theywill start to look after themselves when the winter comes. These
  7. 7. animals may become dormant but they do not hibernate. Raccoonswill usually mate in the late winter to the early spring to January toMarch, but there are more raccoon species that have been known tomate later which is in June. After the gestation period which is usually2 months. The female will give birth to 5 baby raccoons. The namefor a baby raccoon are usually called cubs or kits. These babies areborn blind and deaf the moment that they are born. But they will startto get these senses in the first month. These babies are not born withhair so instead. They will have a layer of a light color fur. That hasdistinctive black mask that will be visible that happens during birth.Baby raccoons will weigh about 10cm long when they are born andthey can also weight about 75g. The raccoons will nurse their babiesin 7 weeks to 4 months. The babies will remain inside of the motheruntil winter comes. The Gestation period is between 60-73 weeks to60 days that is their normal gestation period. The number of kits willbe about 1 to 7 babies. The mother will give birth in April and in June. The Estral period is 80 to 140 days. These animals are equallyopportunistic when it comes to finding a good denning area. Whenthey do find a den which will be in a tree hole, a fallen log or in anattic that is in a house. The females will have 1 to 7 cubs; Femalesstart to have their babies in the early summer. The babies will oftenspend their first two months and their lives high up in a tree hole. After that then the mother and her babies will start to move to theground so that the cubs will start to explore all by themselves.Raccoons will reach maturity in 2 years are for the males and for thefemales is only for 1 year. The raccoon’s gestation period is 60 to 73days. The average litter size for a raccoon is 3 to 4 babies. Femaleswill start to have their babies in the spring they will usually give birthto 3 to 4 cubs. The babies’ eyes will not be able to open until 20 daysafter they are born. These animals will not have rings on their tail or amask that will be found around their eyes until they get older. Thebabies will remain in the den for about eight to ten weeks. The motherraccoon are really protective when it comes to her babies. She evenwill not let the father go any where near them. The mother will bepregnant for about 63 to 65 days. The mother will normally have 2 to6 cubs in a litter. Raccoons are in danger because they are gettingpushed into smaller places where is really hard to find food andwater. Their numbers are starting to shrink in their urban areas. Theraccoon’s numbers are starting to increase. There are about 800,000to one million of raccoons that live all over the state of Minnesota.
  8. 8. Every year in this state there are hunters that are coming after theseanimals because they want to harvest about 100,000 to 150, 00raccoons that are getting killed in Minnesota. Trappers are also killingthem to. They have killed about over 75,000 to 100,000. They arealso in trouble because their habitat is so close to human territory.Raccoons have been living side by side with humans for generations.Raccoons are one of the most valuable wild animals in the UnitedStates at this moment because of value. This animal can also befound in other countries to like they can be found in France, TheNetherlands, in Germany and they can also be found in the parts ofSoviet Union. These populations for these animals have grown overthe last few years. There are some cases that are now considered tobe a nuisance. That is what I know about raccoons.
