  • Big Data – A panoply of data sources exist throughout the –Verse, with the quantity of data growing at an exponential rate. The problem with big data isn’t that there is too much of it, but rather that there aren’t enough ways for audiences at all levels to interact with, learn from and act upon the information which could be gleaned from a single data set or a mash-up of one, two or a thousand data sets. The Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is working to provide rapid contextual discovery of data sources and analysis via on- and off-line tools available to audiences of all types. This interactive conversation will focus on where the data is coming from and where it is delivered; How DOE/EERE is performing analysis of social, intellectual property, and building performance data; What value we can derive from continued development of data discovery engines such as OpenEI, Energy.data.gov and the National GeoThermal Data System; and How big data is being analyzed by some of DOE’s laboratories.
  • Aims to create cohesionbetween buildingautomation system (BAS)data, localmeasurements, and occupant feedback toprovidevisualizations, empowering occupants, facility managers, andbuilding engineers to takediagnostic, proactive,energy-saving, andcomfort-improving actions.Project Goals:Establish two-way communication to put humans in the loopEngage occupants and facility managers to enable energy savingsCorrelate occupant feedback with local and whole building measurements to make informed control decisions

    • 2. The Obligatory Big Data Definition• Big data is the term adopted by the market to describe extreme information management and processing issues which exceed the capability of traditional information technology along one or multiple dimensions to support the use of the information assets. Throughout 2010 and into 2011, big data has focused primarily on the volume issues of extremely large datasets generated from technology practices such as social media, operational technology, Internet logging and streaming sources. A wide array of hardware and software solutions have emerged to address the partial issue of volume. At this point, big data, or extreme information processing and management, is essentially a practice that presents new business opportunities. -- http://www.gartner.com/it-glossary/big-data/2 | Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy eere.energy.gov

Theaverage user still has about 130friends, but that should expand in2011. Over 700 Billion minutes amonth are spent on Facebook,20 million applications areinstalled per day and over 250million people interact withFacebook from outside theofficial website on a monthlybasis, across 2 million websites.Over 200 million people accessFacebook via their mobilephone. 48% of young people saidthey now get their news throughFacebook. Meanwhile, in just 20minutes on Facebook over 1million links are shared, 2 millionfriend requests are accepted andalmost 3 million messages aresent. 5 | Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Source: http://www.digitalbuzzblog.com/facebook-statistics-stats-facts-2011/ Source: http://xkcd.com/802/ eere.energy.gov
    • 6. Mobile Devices – creation andconsumption of Big Data• At the end of 2011, there were 6 billion mobile subscriptions. (thats 87 percent of the world’s population). *• ComScore (February 2011) estimates that 90 percent of mobile subscribers in US and Western Europe have a phone that can access the mobile Web. *• In 2010, 300,000+ applications were downloaded 10.9 billion times. IDC predicts that global downloads will reach 76.9 billion in 2014 and will be worth US$35 billion.*• ComScore (Feb 2011) finds that there are now 29 percent of US subscribers who have unlimited data plans• VC investments in mobile marketing and advertising companies was $592 million in 2011 (up from $128 million).• VC investments in mobile commerce and payments was $558 million in 2011 (up from $276 million).• VC investments in mobile health was $356 million in 2011 (up from $209 million).
