Leisure <ul><li>What is the meaning of Leisure? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A period which you spend doing things other than your work. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>A period of recuperation, or time to be filled after work was done. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Importance of Leisure: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Bring about a positive flow of energy in a person </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Help to refresh the mind </li></ul></ul>

What’s part of leisure <ul><li>Recreation activities </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Active - Sports, strength exercises </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Passive – Games, walks </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Cognitive activities </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Reading, spiritual education, puzzles </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Social activities </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Dancing, singing, playing cards, </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Daily life activities </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Eating, sleeping, cooking, cleaning, </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Others </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Watching TV, playing an instrument, gardening, tourism, etc. </li></ul></ul>

Two types of recreation <ul><li>Active recreation </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Is about engaging in adventure sports or outdoor games </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Have physical resistance </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Hiking </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Biking </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Skiing </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Passive recreation </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Involves activities such as taking a walk on the riverside, walking on the beach, strolling in parks or taking nature walks </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Very little or no physical resistance activities </li></ul></ul></ul>
  6. 6. Importance of Recreation <ul><li>Devoting some time for recreation on a daily basis helps in the long run in maintaining health and achieving a peace of mind. Participate in some regular physical activity, play a sport or exercise. These recreational activities serve as a means of relaxation. Research has shown that recreation on a daily basis reduces risks of diabetes and hypertension, enhances physical and mental health and improves the quality of life. (Oak, 2010) </li></ul>

Physical Activity <ul><li>Some of the benefits of regular physical activity include: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Improved fitness and quality of life; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Better physical and mental health; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>More energy and reduced stress; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Stronger muscles and bones; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Better posture and balance; and </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Prolonged independent living in later life. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>(CSEP, Health Canada, 1999) </li></ul></ul>
